    Hi all,

    Firstly please forgive me if this has been covered.

    I am just upgrading to the Pro Edition by loading in my Giga patches and finding the corresponding or newer versions of the samples from the 1st Edition. I was very dissappointed when hearing the Legato 1st Violins (VI-14_perf_leg_f) compared with the same from the 1st Edition (VI-14_mV_perf_leg_f). I have updated the Performance Tool files and selected the updated violin legato patch but it still doesn't sound great , in my opinion. The samples have been tidied up and possibly better volume matched, but the legato element seems to be either not working or is meant for very slow passages, as I am not getting anywhere near as smooth legato effect on the Pro Edition as I was with the 1st Edition.
    Has anyone else experienced this? or has opinions?

    PS There is a LOT of nice new stuff in the Pro Edition however (if you were thinking of upgrading!)

    Hello Jacques,

    The perf-leg_f instruments (for violins, violas, and cellos) of the First Edition are in the Pro Edition labeled perf-leg_f-sul.
    This performance legati are intervall steps played on one string.

    The perf-leg_f of the Pro Edition are new patches with intervalls played over two strings.

    Here is a brief comparision chart:

    First Edition..................Pro Edition

    perf-leg_p....................perf-leg_p
    perf-leg_f.....................perf-leg_f-sul
    perf-leg_f-porta............perf-leg_f-porta

    Herb, just for confirmation and clarification, so the PERF-LEG_F in the first edition is actually legato leaps played on the originating string? Sul? And perhaps to alleviate confusion, in hindsight, it would have been better to have named the PERF-LEG_F in the first edition PERF-LEG_F-SUL so that both editions share the same naming conventions?

    Please confirm that I have this correct. And by the way, I was just about to today write you about doing some SUL instruments.

    I think it would be great to have an entire "Perf-Leg-Sul_G" for instance. As a composer hyperly aware of the orchestra (also I am an orchestrator), I often balance tonality and texture between the different String families by enforcing when they play on which particular strings. For example, the violin's G string's midrange can blend better with the violas at times than the same line played on the D string.

    Thanks for the replies Herb and Evan [:D] I have tried herbs suggestion out on the Pro Edition, though since I have been scoring this soundtrack for the last few months using the 1st Edition, my personal opinion is that the leg_f from the 1st edition sounds and works better than the equivalent in the Pro Edition, maybe it's just my writing style but I will certainly look into it when I have more time (and this project is mastered!) Til then I have found a happy medium with about 70% of Pro sounds and 30% of 1st Edition sounds so to ease the mixing and mastering situation without too much re-programming and sequencing.

    It's often a matter, how fast the movements of the lines are, and it also depends on the orchestration, simply how "clear" you need the articulation.

    For slower and espressivo movements the "sul" version is perfect,
    faster movements with clear articulation the normal "f" patch works well.

    For very fast movements (graces, mordents) I think the "perf-leg_grace" I gigfile is the best choice. Of course only for movements using mainly half and whole tone steps.

    Finally it's always a matter of taste. The best way is to check out the different options, and than choosing the most exciting one.

    Hi Evan,

    you are right the labeling in the first edition was a mistake.
    It was pretty hard to anticipate all options of the Pro edition.

    We'll also put some basic sul G articulations on our "To do list".

    By the way, I posted a "Repetition Tool" explanation in the EXS forum, in your
    "Using 2 PERF Legato Violins causes conflict" topic.
    Maybe you have missed it.

    I'll also add a legato tool explanation and after that a tips and tricks chapter. I think it would also be a good idea to place all this chapters as announcement on the top of the forum list (and also in the FAQ section)

    That'd be great. Since I was the original poster in that thread I thought about renaming it, but what you suggest would be the most appropriate. Copy and paste your explanations into a special post at the top of that subforum.
