    Stunning Herb. Could you elaborate more on the articulations used.

    I would love to hear how this piece would sound using just the Pro Edition strings without the Performance set repetitions just to see how the alternating tool copes. Any chance?

    Is it only me that hears it, or does Kuno Schmid's demo really have some sound quality issues, that I'm not used to when listening to VSL demos? I guess there might be an issue with the used MP3 encoder?

    Evan, thank you for throwing in the detail about your reverbs... I just got the altiverb a couple weeks ago and I'm going to try out your setup, because i LOVE the sound that you achieved.

    VSL, you guys continue to blow me away. WOW.

    The most important patches I used are Alternation instruments.
    stac_1+2,
    0'3s_1+2,
    0'5s_1+2
    using a simple 1:2 setup in the alternation tool.

    There are of course also performance repetitions. Sometime the repetitions work better, sometime I prefer simple alternations. Generally it's better to use repeitions if you have more than 4 repetitions.

    For the bassi I used only alternations, six doublebasses is a very large section for this intimate piece. The single notes do have less randomness, therefore the bassi do have smaller impression.
    And this works better in combination with the cellos (where I used repetitions)

    Most of desicions are very subjective, I also took the chance to experiment with different options during programming this piece.

    To be honest, I don't like to go back and make alternative versions - the programming was hard enough for me, because I played this piece during my active cello career to often.

    At the moment I'm working on Saint Saens cello concerto.
    I really like it, because it's the first time, that "my" intonation is OK, and I can perform the difficult passages in the right tempo. [[;)]]

    You bet. Thanks for the compliment. I think most of those other demos are from the GigaStudio Setup, but I can't be sure. But certainly the sound quality of mine is way off from theirs. I probably should have uploaded a mastered version, but that AltiVerb REALLY colors the sound. So much so that it doesn't sound too mastered when it is done. So a word to the wise, listen to the sound of the mix PRE-Altiverb, then apply an EQ post-Altiverb to compensate and get your spectrum back to where it was, if not better.

    i pray each night that when Emagic's New Reverb comes out that it sounds sonically much better than Altiverb, because AltiVerb's sound is just sooo colored.

    it's not a question of the engine. It's a question of the IRs used. Convolution, if done properly, doesn't have a "sound of its own".

    I know that I'm asking the obvious now - but did you try Ernest Cholakis' IR-Sets (i.e. from Numerical Sound)?

    I haven't tried 3rd party IRs or invested in any because I thought that every set used their own Impulses. Isn't that true? Wouldn't one's set be incompatible with some engines? Help me to understand this. I wouldn't have to convolve them again would I?

  • Actually, IRs are just "samples", which could be used with any convolver. As a matter of fact, they are often supplied as simple *.wav-files. The convolvers are what you would call a Sample Player for "conventional" instrument samples.

    That said, it's of course necessary to "adapt" the IRs for the use with certain engines like AltiVerb, but the tools to achieve this are supplied with the program itself, AFAIK.
