  • What hard drives are people using? internal or external?

HD's are clearly important since VSL is streaming, and I would assume that most people are using internal, but has anybody had any luck with an external drive (i.e. firewire)?

  • Strictly speaking Gigastudio does the streaming.
But yes, I’m using Giga on a laptop with an external 80gb firewire drive and it works very well. The main problem is that the 4-pin firewire socket on the laptop doesn’t make a very secure connection with the cable – move the laptop and sometimes the connection is lost. I don’t know if this is a common problem or not.

Tascam recommend restricting the HD size to 80 Gb, this is not ideal for use with vsl, I dutifully bought a 80 gig drive, but are there any problems with using, say, a 120 gig drive?

    regards

  • Hello there,

I have been using an external Firewire 120 gig hard drive for the First Edition of the VSL (one of the IBM ones with the 911 chipset - 8 meg buffer with the clear plastic case.) The drive has worked very well for me. I will most likely continue working with external drives. Initially I had planned on making the transition to an internal drive - once I upgraded my system/rig - but it has work so well I just haven't bothered.

    All the best.

  • I'm using an external firewire LACIE 200Gb drive without any problems at all - although i'm using HALION (GIGA Imported). The performance of the drive is actually better than my internal laptop one and I've had no problems yet.

  • firewire itself will never be the bottleneck (except other I/O happens over the same port simultaneously - only one data-stream can use it at the same time), it gives you about 40 MB/s. so everything depends on how fast the disk in the firewire-enclosure is. we're using maxtors up to 250 GB in icecube-cases. internal notebook-disks tend to be slower than external ones and yes, the 4-pin-connector (on vaios) seem to be a little bit *fragile*. using IBMs or 7200-drives i would recommend an enclosure with a fan - they get really hot.

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • Great!

I was expecting everyone to call me an idiot for wanting an external drive, so merry christmas to me.

Thanks all, external firewire it is...
