  • Problems with Repetition Tool

I have some strange problems with the Repetition Tool. When I record a melody in cubase and play it everthing is ok, but when I change the song tempo (Cubase is stoped) the Repetition Tool plays ever the first note
It sounds like there is no Repetition Tool

  • Hello Andreas,

please sent a short mail to Christian Marin (CM)

  • Well, I experience the same - but regardless wether I change the tempo or not.
After a certain time the rep. tool stops to work correctly. [:'(]
Then reloading the perf. tool helps... [[:|]]

  • Please everybody who has similiar problems send an email to Christian Marin. (He will support you with an analyse tool, so we can figure out your problems).

  • Yes, I'm having this problem as well - the same problem happens regardless of the computer I'm running it on, or the port, or the channel, or the instrument. After about 15 to 90 minutes the repetition tool refuses to advance to the next note until I reset the performance tool.

Also, I'm noticing a lot of timing problems when using the repetition tool - the start note seldom is synced properly with the rest of the pattern and I have to adjust the offset manually despite loading the preset for that instrument.
The timing between certain notes in the repetition sequences seems off as well - it varies from patch to patch. Certain 8ths or 16ths will be early or later compared to the others - it's usually the 2nd, 7th, or 8th repetition that is off. I've really noticed it with the string repetitions (piano and mezzoforte) and in the horns. It doesn't seem so bad in the clarinet or the oboe.

What I'm having to do now is record every single instrument track individually and then cut up all the notes and manually straighten out the timing - very time consuming. What I can't tell is whether it is a problem with the tool or the programming of the offsets in the repetion instruments.

  • To adjust the timing of the starting note you can use the "First keyswitch delay" slider.
The startingnote is an exception, because no previous note was played. All following notes do have a delay, because the samples starts with the tail of the previous note to get a right sounding transition.

The "first keyswitch delay" generates a virtual delay on the starting note, so that all samples have the same timing.
For some presets I didn't setup the whole delay length, because if you strongly speed up the original tempo, you could loose the first sample completely. So it's a compromiss. If you don't speed up the tempo very much, you can look at the pdf documentation, there you find the exact delay values, and adjust it in the repetition tool.

If you have problems with the latency of these delays during playing, programm the passage with normal multisamples, check out which tempo you've played, alter the miditrack to a performance repetition instrument, and setup the pre delay on these miditrack (a minus value of the dimension delay).

You should not have timing problems with 2nd or other dimensions.
Of course we could have made mistakes in finding the right startinpoints during our editing process, but not for all keys in one programming.
We always double check the inpoints and load them into the sequenzer and test them with midi templates.

If you find any samples with wrong starting points please inform us.
We really try to make the sample database as perfect as possible

    thanks a lot

  • Thanks for the reply Herb. That does answer my question about the starting notes. Perhaps in the future we could have templates where the starting note's offset matches what's in the pdf documentation. This would help for those of us who are quantizing a rhythmic line in the sequencer and don't need to speed up the sequence.

I did quite a bit of brass repetion sequencing today and had no troubles with the timing in the middle notes. It seems to only be in the strings - perhaps just with the few notes in the lines that I'm using. I'll try to provide more detailed information in the future about which notes seem to be off.

    Off topic:
I had another one of those VSL goosebump experiences today using the string dynamic patches in combination with the legato tool (with and without "ghost" mode.) Those dynamic patches can really make the music come alive - I don't think mod-wheel layers or filter-controllers can compare. I hope there will be more string ensemble dynamics in the pro edition to fill in the holes - they're great!
