    Great work all around! This will be the library to end all libraries.

    I take it that all the samples are centered stereo and that the panning is in the users control as opposed to the in place stereo arrangement on a stage.

    Looks like this forum will be the place to discuss the panning options as well as sampled reverb.

    I look forward to it.

    And yes: I'm convinced that unrestricted panning options are the way to go.

    In the past I have always panned the string samples in my orchestral setup. Vlns left, Vcs right etc. When I did this to the VSL, everything seemed far too wide (even though I didn't pan hard left and right). I find that I achieve the best orchestral balance with VSL when I don't pan the strings.

    When you recorded the strings, were the sections recorded in the center of the stereo spectrum? Or did you favor the left with the Vln section, the right with the Celli etc.?

    By the way I am amazed at the quality that you (the creators of the VSL) have achieved.

    Do you have access to Waves plugins? The S1 spatial plug-in allows you to move a stereo image seemingly without narrowing towards the left or the right. Certainly I wouldn't record tracks with 'panning' (should really be called 'balance' as it's a stereo signal) set to anything other than centre. If you need to use normal panning after that, maybe try splitting the stereo channel into two, and panning the right channel to, say, centre, leaving the left channel hard left [for the 1st violins]. This way you don't loose any information. Yes the VSL ensembles are recorded with quite a broad image, so it will sound quite extreme if you simply 'pan' (shift the l/r balance).
