    Maartens 5th demo, and again a new genre:
    This dark and mysterious "concertpiece" (little concert ambience noise was added for more realism) is another color in Maartens all-round palette.

    I think Maarten deserves at least one word of praise for his latest effort. Very impressive work!
    Um . . . I do seem to notice that your mixes sound a little close miced (sp?). Maybe a slightly deeper reverb or something. This is not in any way meant to criticize your compositions. They are excellent. Just an observation from someone who records classical musicians from time to time.
    In any case, keep up the good work! And please do supply us with higher bitrate MP3s next time. [H]

    Yeah... reverb and ambience is always a personal thing. I like ambience, of course, but I also like detail in a mix. Not just a pair of AB mikes at the end of the hall. That way I think my music sounds too much like classical recordings, and I don't want that. [[[:)]]] That's not the way "film" music should sound, in my view. I prefer a more controlled sound. Place every instrument exactly where I want it. And yeah... you need some close'ness detail for that. But I wouldn't really call my demos close mic'ed. I think it's more of a "detailed" mix. [[[:)]]]

    I don't create the mp3's myself. VSL gets wave files from me. So you should ask Herb for higher bitrates.

    i just have a question to this demo. how did you make the "Concert hall ambience noise" in the demo? and what is this noise exactly?

    The hall ambience noise in this demo is a patch from one of the GOS (Garritan Orchestral Strings) update discs. I just triggered one of the looped ambience noise keys at the start of the song. [:)]

    I think what Gary Garritan did is just record about a minute of silence, with the players there, holding their instruments, and with all equipment turned on. You can hear them move.

    What is the noise exactly? Well, so, moving players, on their wooden (?) chairs, some very subtle coughs, something that sounds like the instruments or bows being moved around, I think some ventilation or other air flow too, and of course some real "tape" hiss.

    That's about it.

  • I can tell you exactly what the noise samples are, since I made them [;)]

    I got some original recordings from Gary Garritan, in which I edited out all the "silent" parts to create waht I call Noise Samples. This means you get some bow movement (tapping an instrument, softly putting on the strings etc) and chair creaking from players moving, and even some slight paper movment (which I tried to keep to a minimum). There are 4-5 seperate noise samples each equaling about 15-40 seconds in length if I remember correctly. This allows for you to rotate between different ones so you dont get any cyclical sounds if you dont want them. Its definitely cool if you ask me [:)]
