  • Could VI go 64 bit?

    Hi

I know Logic is only out a couple of days, but I was just wondering if any of the Vienna guys could tell me if they have any plans to release a 64bit VI? I found this information on the logic 8 forum and was wondering what vienna thought about this?

"In order to give poor Rohan a pub break, let me tell you what I know. I'm not a coder. I'm a pro audio editor and writer. In fact, my most recent gig was editing the Keymap 1.5 manual, which features tight integration with the Logic 8 EXS. This required the direct programming work of both Redmatica and Apple. So here's what I know. And this comes from discussions with 3rd party developers, and developers with Apple.

The audio engine of the EXS is compiled and runs as a 64-bit process. This means that it can access more than 4GB of RAM.

Mr. 8Track, you seem to have a problem with this. Since the EXS does not have a problem accessing more than 4GB of RAM, you have something going wrong with your computer. I don't know if it's pilot error, or a legitimate bug in your rig. Either way, I recommend that you get on the phone to Apple Pro Audio AppleCare and let them know exactly what's going on. You may have just found a bug that I can assure you they'll want to fix ASAP. This is a significant feature of Logic Pro 8 and they're quite motivate to make sure it works. And when you call support, be sure to get them to escalate you to Pro Audio AppleCare immediately. You don't want to end up talking to an iPod technician for half an hour first.

And there's even more fun and exciting news:it is now possible for third party AU plug-ins to do the same thing in Logic 8! In other words, a third party plug-in, such as Kontakt, can develop a separate 64-bit executable for it's audio engine, and then it too will be able to access more than 4GB RAM from within Logic. Now, I'm sure this would be a LOT of work, so I wouldn't expect it to happen soon, if at all. But 3rd party developers have recently been seeded with developers copies of Logic 8, so you can start harassing all of them to rewrite their plug-in to include a separate 64-bit executable audio engine.

Anyway, as I said, I'm not a coder, so I'm not going to get in a ******* contest with anyone who wants to challenge my (non-existent) understanding of the fundamentals of addressing. What I believe is that we're currently seeing the best of all worlds—64-bit addressing for samplers without all the detrimental aspects of a fully 64-bit application (lack of 3rd party AUs available, GUI half the speed, half the track count, etc). Good times for Logic!

  • golem already posted he will get us informed as soon as there are news on this topic.
so far we have to consider several things:
    - logic 8 is said to have a full 64bit compiled audio engine including the exs (the latter is irrelevant for VI)
    - however it must currently communicate with the 32bit GUI framework (it should be much easier for apple developers to do this than for others)
    - 64bit AU plugin with an interface would make really sense only on a final 64bit system
    - we don't have a final leopard (and history tells many things change until the first servicepack arrives)
    - we don't even have a copy of logic 8 so far (thanks to everybody involved for taking so much care on VSL)
    - there are still some software libraries missing to even compile a 64bit version, no one's fault, just a matter of consecutive dependencies downward to a final leopard)
so please be patient, you will hear news as soon as they are worth to be announced.

  • WOW!

Thanks for the reply!! You have answered all my questions, roll on leopard!!

  • This is an old question. I've been hassling VSL for ages now. Golem promised a thread about it 3 months ago. Windows users have had a 64bit OS for ages, but so far there is no news on VI. I'm sure that VSL are working on it, but I just hope that us Windows users don't have to wait for Apple to catch up in order to get a 64bit version of VI.

  • There is one thing I'd like to know about the future 64 bits VI :
Will it run on Vista 64 AND xp x64 ?

The current one does already on XP64.

  • The current one ???????? [[:|]]

    Beta release ?

  • *the current* is the 32bit VI ... installs and runs on XP64, however i did not mage to receive a sound with the used soundcard ...
though i am cheerful regarding a 64bit version for PC on XP64 i'm not convinced VISTA would be a good choice for audio - my first excursion into VISTA32 has been dreadful regarding need of memory for the OS only ...

  • Ah ! Okay ! Thank you Christian

I've the same opinion about Vista, It's why I asked about the compatibility for the 64bits VI we are waiting for and xp64.

It works very well with FXT, but obviously limits one to 3.9GB RAM.
