  • Show Window Button When using Logic 7

Just Purchased a Mac Pro 8-core and Logic 7. I've been a PC guy for many years - my first Mac. With the change comes a slight learning curve.

Question: When I select to open one of the VI instruments in Logic, I first get a window that states: "Vienna INstrument AudioUnit Server Interface" followed by a button "SHOW WINDOW". No other AU reponds in that way resulting in an extra key press and sometimes moving the window out of the way.

Do I have something set up incorrectly or is that the way VI responds in Logic?

    I appreciate any assistance....

    Thanks,

    Chuck Green

It works that way on all hosts (at least on the Mac) - an apparently necessary peculiarity of its architecture. You'll also need to learn to ignore a red "not responding" on the list of CPU processes in the Activity Monitor, another artifact of the architecture.

... of UNIX-like operating systems. a deamon not responding just means he has *nothing to say to the GUI* which is correct for a server.
the architecture allows to access another 4 GB memory besides the one used by your host, which would not be possible if it would run within the host.

  • Thanks Johnny and Christian for your reply's. I'm still not understanding why only VI responds that way and the other AU's I have loaded on the system do not? Please help me understanding........

  • Hi Chuck,

the Vienna Instruments on OSX are connected to an outside "VSL Server" - as the VSL Server is a seperate application, it needs a connection to your Logic, which is achieved by these unusual windows. You can also arrange these windows on your screen, they won´t change location.

Now here is the advantage: Every appliciation on OSX can use up to about 3 GB of RAM. As the VSL Server is a seperate application, you can load 3 GB in your RAM using Logic (with EXS24 and other plugins) and additional 3 GB in the Vienna Instruments.

    Hope this helps!

  • Thanks Paul. Is there a way to have Muliple VSL Server applications on the same box thereby allowing 3GB on each instance of VSL Server. Just a thought......

  • Not possible it seems, and we are all waiting for Leopard and a 64bit VI to get around this limit. [:)]

  • chuck, it would be possible but unsupportable ...
