Wow - can you elaborate at all Julian?

I thought RAM limits per application required a new operating system, are you saying Logic has found a way around this?

Presumably it doesn't affect VSL (Vienna Instrument) users, because the VI uses it's own virtual server, which I guess will still be subject to the same RAM limitations we've had up to now.

Would be great to have some more information.

uh, Sonar "cracked" that a while ago with Sonar 5 as far as I can tell. 128 gigs of RAM to be specific.

I would be very surprised if this affects Vienna Instrument users. If it does, then that's one good reason to change to Mac. Hang on, I'd have to use iLogic. Scratch that. [:(]

Yes by combining Vienna Instruments and Pro Edition you can now have orchestrations using a level of single machine RAM availability not available on any other platform and as the Pro Edition in a lot of instances interfaces seemlessly with Vienna Instruments I would say it's a big bonus rather than a proliferation of grey boxes all around your studio!!

So it only works when you use Pro Edition as well. I haven't used that for 20 months, and have no intention of taking a backwards step after all this time.

FWIW I have no grey boxes round my studio, as I run all my samples over a network, and the machine room is elsewhere.

Hmmmmmm. I'll wait for a 64bit VI player I think.

Sonar absolutely did not provide 128GB of RAM access to any sampler. Everyone would have been using Sonar all along if that were the case.

Some more info regarding Logic breaking the 4GB RAM barrier - seems like it extends to all plug-in developers who have the resources to join the club!!

Sounds convincing Julian. This is regarding the embedded EXS24 I understand. How would this address the VI for instance - the same way?

I'm not qualified to answer this though it appears 3rd party plug-ins now have the potential to expand their addressable RAM when used within Logic. I wonder if this is commercially viable or technically achievable for Vienna Instruments.

The advantages are clear - the true potential of our current computers is realised without having to wait for the complete 64 bit set up with the software and hardware issues that this will surely bring.

I know Apple have bigger fish to fry than us audio professionals but I am surprised there hasn't been more trumpetting over this advance. It would also be cool to hear more audio software designers reaction to confirm it's not a figment of the imagination!

Probably not enough users have taken advantage of Logic 8 just yet. A lot of Logic users on the other hand that have L8 thus far, probably don't care so much for the larger orchestral samples that guys like us do, ergo, they haven't tried to load in large templates.

Would be good to hear from the VSL dev's if they have any plans to exploit this opportunity, or if they perhaps have something of their own up their sleeve. Presumably the VSL server application would need to be recoded as a 64-bit executable in order for this to work, but that would represent a huge step forward IMO.

But 3rd party developers have recently been seeded with developers copies of Logic 8, so you can start harassing all of them to rewrite their plug-in to include a separate 64-bit executable audio engine.

What I believe is that we're currently seeing the best of all worlds—64-bit addressing for samplers without all the detrimental aspects of a fully 64-bit application (lack of 3rd party AUs available, GUI half the speed, half the track count, etc). Good times for Logic!
