    Hi

    I was just wondering how people use the x-fad in VI. Do you use it all the time, or only on legato and sustained notes? Or do you not use it at all?

    Some advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

    I use it for everything except percussion.

    Not because I want to though - but I dont like too many keyswitches back and forth. If I could I would set it so I used Xfade for susutained notes and velocity for short notes. But this is not possible yet(?) without either hitting a keyswitch or changing matrix.

    I'm sure you already know this, but have you considered assigning a CC to switch the VelX-fade on or off?

    It works well for me. I use CC#2 assigned to a knob on my controller keyboard so I can use it "on the fly".

    Yep. I have such a CC - but it's an annoyance for me when I work. The VI does such a good job of automating many things, making them "setup and forget" - meaning once set up I just work. That's why I dont like the additional controller information. I like to just switch to an articulation and then have it work as I intend without tweaking it further.

    Christian, why don't you use the same controller for "Vel-XFade on/off" and for "vertical cell switches".

    Setup a dedicted matrix (the "Christian Marcussen Matrix")
    In the top cells place your short note articulations, where crossfade should be OFF, and in the lower cells place your sustains (pef leg, sustains vib/no vib).

    So if you switch between short articulations and sustains you will also switch crossfade on/off, so this feature is "automated".

    Yes - but then I will miss out on cool features like velocity swithing and speed control, which I use alot between normal and fast legato. [:(]

    You could use "speed control" on the horizontal cells, and articulation switches linked with the "vel-Xfade on/off" on the vertical cells.

    Hi Herb. These options wont work for my workflow I'm afraid. I like having many articualtions, with lots of 'programming'.

    Anyway, I just figured I could setup different matrixs (one for legato, one for short notes etc). Unfortunately the "performance" tab is setup so it's universal... I was hoping that I could set it to velocity Xfade 'on' for the legato matrix and 'off' for the short notes.

    In other words no matter if I do it within one matrix, or even between several matrixes I cant do it [:(]

    I really wish that this was possible. I find it (and have heard others state this) a real limitation - and one that seems easily fixed.

    Actually Christian, there are quite a few limitations that should be fixed. I just hope that VSL is listening, 'cos some of them cause real problems with workflow.

    For example, the fact that the legato threshold is fixed means that to force a start note you have to leave a huge gap. For those of use who can actually play the keyboard there is no need to have a fixed threshold; the user definable one that the Performance Tool in Giga has is very useful. It doesn't even have to be something that can be changed on the fly. I would be happy to set it to 0, and then just play; legato or not.

    I agree - there are indeed other issues. This one is just one of the bigger, and it has just bugged me since release. It seems so obvious to me that it needs to be fixed - yet nothing has happled yet. So I'm just at it again [:)]

    If you dedicate just one Matrix to the workflow I've described, it would work.
    Don't you have a free Matrix slot within your setups?

    Hi Herb, that sounds very interesting. In that case I'm not sure I understand, and perhaps you could elaborate?

    Lets say I have 5 Matrixes:

    1: Legato (Xfade ON)
    2: Staccato (OFF)
    3: Pizzicato (OFF)
    4: Detache (ON)

    Each of the above consists on both Speed control, and velocity control. For instance when I hit Pizicatto hard it activate the "snap" articulation and if I hit it really soft I get "Slow".

    Then what would I do?

    I don't know how to switch between short and long articulation using switch by velocity in combination switch by speed.
    You won't be able to trigger short articulations in a slow tempo or at a lower velocity for example?
    So if I want to switch between short and long articulations I need at least one standard controller and here I have the option to link this controller to vel Xfade on/off.

    I'm not sure I understand you correctly...

    But I dont intend to switch between long and short using velocity...

    What I would like is to switch between Matrixes using a keyswitch. Then if possible (using your method) I would like to make so that when I switch to matrix 2 (staccatos) I have Xfade off, and when I switch to matrix 1 (legato) it is on.

    If that isn't possible, then I would just like to state again - it makes little sense (to me) that the performance tab is related to the entire instance, rather than the active matrix. That way there would be no hocus pocus or work-arounds - simply select a matrix and off you go [:)]

    The question was, how to automate vel on/off and I tried to show how this can be managed.

    You can to this inside one (or more) dedicated matrices:
    Switching inside a matrix between different articulations using a syncronised controller to cel X-fade on/off.

    Use a dedicated matrix where you need an automated vel switch on/off, and use other matrixes for other performance setups. That's the main idea behind this multi-matrix concept.

    By "hocus pocus" I simply mean "tricks" and no-conventional solutions. No harm meant.

    I'm sorry Herb I simply don't understand how you want me to set it up. Can someone who gets it try explain it to me like i'm a 10 year old kid [:D]

    Haha, I glazed over hours ago. I still don't think that what you want is possible. If you could switch xFade on/off by keyswitch it would be, but as it has to be a continuous controller, then it won't work IMO.

    Here you have a presetfile with two matrices. (for appassionata violins)
    Both matrices use modwheel (cc01) for vertical cell switch and vel Xfade on/off,
    Matrix one uses also "speed control",
    Matrix two "keyswitches" for horizontal switches.
    Velocity Xfade slider is not assigned in this preset, use any controller you like (except cc01)
