    Does OWC have their info correct?

    From apple.com:

    Processor and memory
    1.83GHz or 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
    2MB or 4MB on-chip L2 cache
    667MHz frontside bus
    1GB of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300) on two SO-DIMMs; supports up to 2GB

    the chipset supports 4 GB RAM, you just have to be careful with the DIMMs regarding heat emission. initially we had to remove the 4 GB from a macbook pro because they regulary overheated - another model of DIMMs did the job finally ...

    cm, was this a new MBP, the 15" one with the LCD screen? The one you can order with 4GB but I didn't, instead paying 1/4 the price for RAM I was going to put in my new machine today?

    In other words, should I be worried?

    JWL, the reason Other World Computing (a Mac dealer that's been around for a long time) is shouting about 3GB is precisely that they understand what you just copied from the Apple site. But I wonder if the reason they're saying 3GB instead of 4 - if that's the same chipset as the MBP (even though I'm pretty sure the processor is different, since the MPB uses a "Santa Rosa" Core2 duo) - is overheating...

    it was a 17" and last december ... a few months later we've been able to upgrade RAM and keep the machine stable.
    i'd also assume they put just one DIMM into the macMini to avoid overheating - or there is not enough space for 2 double sided DIMMs? remember the iMac first generation ... was also a problem with space when upgrading RAM ...

    Ah, then I'm probably okay. The outfit I bought my memory from (1884memory.com) has been reliable in the past.

    So is this as simple as loading a single 2 gb DIMM in place of one of the present 1 gb sticks and leaving the other 1 gb in place? You're good to go at this point or?

    no risk no fun [;)] i'd check your favorite search engine for special requirements for such DIMMs (thickness, ect), but basically it is as simple ...

    btw: I checked out several of the *disassemble my minimac* videos if i can see some header for the second sATA port to add an external connector ... _this_ would be an advantage ... unfortunately the guys here don't hand me out their's ... [:P]

    Is there a second sATA port in there to be taken advantage of? The mini is getting more interesting every day.

    there must be a second port - question is if there would be a second header, at least some pins on the motherboard ... remember the external VGA on the old iMacs? has been hard to find ...

    I see cm - somewhere in there is the port but how to connect is the issue. That is as deep as my understanding goes but maybe someone will figure it out and rig something up.

    My mini is a 1.83 Core Duo. Does this only work on Core 2 Duo's?

    It looks like that's the case, yes. But I'd give OWC a call and ask just to make sure.

    In any case Nick it looks like a Mac Mini is a far more attractive proposition till the 64 bit world opens up because it's a lot less real estate then a PC and will load the same amount of instruments.

    So you have 4 gigs loaded and no heating problems? Do you have a temp monitor that shows all is well?

    My lap is the temp monitor.

    But this isn't a Mac Mini, it's a MacBook Pro that's intended to hold 4GB.
