  • How to integrate Special Edition in current studio setup...

I would like to install the Special Edition on a dedicated Windows box. Is it possible to control this system using a RDC (Remote Desktop Client) connection from another system (a Mac in this case) ? Will this affect the performance of the included player software ? Is there a recommended setup if I would like to use some Midi over Ethernet software ?

    Regards
    Roger

  • welcome roger,
no issues ... just make sure the setting in the RD-client for audio is *leave at remote computer* (because this is the place your soundcard will be connected to)
usually i'm unchecking printers and leave clipboard checked.
in the tab *experience* i'd coose font smoothing, show content of windows while dragging and uncheck themes.
keep your grafic resolution on 32bit if possible (latest client works best)

for midi over ethernet i can recommend MoL (midi over lan) from musiclab www.musiclab.com

ooops - i've overlooked the *from a mac* above ... but except some quirks with keyboard-layout (computer keyboard) it should work the same way.
in case you're considering some VNC stuff - my experience is that this is producing high load (and display latency) as well as a lot of network traffic

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • just checked - the latest version for mac is 1.0.3 and you can set it similar.
don't forget to actually allow remote desktop on XP and add RD to exceptons in the firewall settings - and don't check *deny exceptions* [;)]
if you are using MoL add port 11000 UDP as exception

  • Thanks a lot for this reply. That was exactly the answer I was hoping for.

  • The requirements for WIndows don't say anything about Core Duo processors.
I would like to use a Windows box with an Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Prozessor 5600. Is this powerfull enough for a moderate workload ?

Ist the ViennaKey included or do I have to buy it separatedly ?

    Is Windows Vista supported ?

    Regards
    Roger

  • with the recent changes in processor design the specs tend to get confusing ... my experience is that a 1,8 GHz core2duo is at least as powerfull as a p5 2,8 GHz ... similar is valid for old/new AMD design.

i made a testinstall on a VISTA32 system - no issues found (besides my soundcard needed a firmware update and i found VISTA to be very RAM-hungry) - VISTA64 would not work currently because of the code execution protection.

if you don't have a ViennaKey (or another syncrosoft USB protection device like one from steinberg) you need to purchase it additionally. it is not included in the package to avoid producing trash (and exceeding costs) for users with several collections

btw: much RAM helps much [;)]

  • Does it make sense to use more then 2GB with Vista ?

    Regards
    Roger

  • yes, definitely ... my test machine here started up with 680 MB RAM used with nothing installed but Vienna Instruments [8-)] i personally don't think VISTA with all its bells and whistles would be a good choice for an audio machine ...
it actually makes sense to run XP with 4 GB RAM btw ....
