I've had sporadic playback w/ VSL on a MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo ever since I bought VSL in March. Tried everything. Nothing worked. Core Audio overload would often be followed by playback shutting down altogether. Sometimes rebooting would bring playback to life again. Other times it would be gone for days. There was no rhyme or reason to any of this, but I figured as a newcomer to DAW and VSL I was doing something wrong.
Finally took my whole system to Apple. Turns out the problem was defective RAM, probably bad from the day I took the computer out of the box. So the new RAM got rid of the vanishing playback, but not the Core Audio overload problem. Another 1 gig of RAM (only cost $59) and I'm finally recording for real, with no playback problems whatsover.
I've noticed a lot of people are having problems w/Logic and VSL, and just have to say from my hard-earned experience.
MAKE SURE YOUR EXISTING RAM IS WORKING PROPERLY, THEN GET AS MUCH OF THE STUFF AS YOUR COMPUTER WILL TAKE.
Seems obvious enough. I just wish I had had my computer checked out right away, rather than go through all the manuals, forums, etc. searching for that magic potion that would solve my problem.
And now, on to recording. Hoorah!
