  • Vienna Instruments Crashing My Powerbook!

I get spits an stutters and massive pops through my speakers when loading/playing sounds. Patches are distorted. Then...crash! My screen goes black and I have to force power off and reboot. It crashes my OS almost every time, and even when it doesn't is totally unusable. This does not bode well for film project I'm in middle of... Any insights?

    welcome thebyronicman,

1,33 GHz is very close to the minimum system requirements - especially on a notebook (slow system drive!)
in any case you should consider your FW-drives and the FW-audio device are colliding when it comes to simultaneous audio and data streaming (AFAIK also the G4 powerbooks just have a single controller)

you might want to play around with motu drivers if any other than the currently installed gives you better results, but you shouldn't expect too much performance from your computer (what else is running?)
i'd assume your G4 has a PCMCIA slot for eg. an additional FW controller, so if you have one laying arount try this.

  • Thanks cm.

I'd been running Opus bundle w/EXS24 for well over a year now and wanted to take advantage of the upgrade. have had no problems running many instances of EXS with the Opus bundle on this same machine, so I didn't realize that the new VI would be such a major increase in power draw. also, had been using USB interface but got the firewire 410 as I needed the extra USB slot for the Vienna Key.

Yeah, got a PCMCIA slot but no FW controller for it. Recommend any one in particular? Will this solve problem with FW bus clogging?

Otherwise, got a ton of EXS samples on system drive, as well as the Spectrasonics trio. (I do a lot of work where I need to be portable so I try to minimize need for external drives). Like I said, I've been running flawlessly with this system for over 2 years. Never dreamed this little upgrade would be upsetting my world to such a degree.

So yeah, just one instance of VI crashes the whole thing. I've got a few other EXS tracks running on samples from internal drive, and a few audio tracks but it's nothing major at all. I think you've identified the problem with the FW controller.

  • just one instance .. didn't notice this before ... possibly it is related to an unsuccessful AU validation ... please try to load an empty logic song (without any other plugins loaded) and try getting through the AU validation.
AFAIK unfortunately logic 7.1 has no option to manually validate an AU plugin and you should in any case verify/repair permissions on your system volume with disk utility first.

  • AU validation fine. repaired permissions before hand but had already done that anyway.

Your suggestion for PCMCIA FW controller makes me feel hopeful. This would be an easy solution if it works. Don't have one handy but could pick up that EZQuest FW400/800 card overnight. Will this take my FW interface off the FW bus? What are the chances this will solve my problem?

    Thanks for your attention.

  • chances are good (as far as i can speak from my experience) - so no luck with different m-audio drivers too?

just to have it mentioned again: don't expect too much from a 1,33 GHz proc ...

  • Interface working fine until I load up a VI. I've got the latest driver for OS 10.4.2 so don't know which other one's to experiment with as it's the only ver. that's even worked at all. Otherwise, got that EZQuest card coming in the morning. I'll let you know how that works out.

As for what I can get out of my little G4 PB - well, no I don't expect miracles but just enough to get by for a while until I get settle in a new place and get a G5 tower.

Thanks so much again, Christian, for your attention and assistance - greatly appreciated.

  • OK - PC card fixes my FW bus clogging issue. many thanks Christian.

Now I'll just have to figure out to to get rid of these little pops and clicks when playing polyphonically. I've seen some threads on that in this forum so I'll look around.
