  • 32GB of RAM for the MAC Pro

    Hi

I know that it is not really useful at the present (plus it is really expensive) but it looks like you can now put 32GB of RAM in a Mac Pro!!!!!

    How mad is that?

  • It all makes Leopard and 64-bit everything that much more intriguing.

Nice to know at least that the hardware is about ready for the next step. I think we can safely thank iToys for some of the delay.

  • When leopard comes out and our DAW and vienna goes 64bit how much RAM can one application access, can it used all 32GB?

If so, does this mean there is no real need for additional machines? After all a 8 core machine with 32GB RAM must be powerful enough?

Yeah, but every time you open a sequence it will take a half hour to load all of the instruments. The nice thing about slave machines is that you can just leave them running.

  • Indeed. One must weigh load times with the cost of running multiple machines, but that's the kind of decision we may enjoy making!

Theoretically, 64-bit threading can access nearly 17TB-- or however much RAM is installed in the computer, whichever quantity is lower! [:P]

Oooh, very true. That's not something people tend to think about... (Though I have to say, my 4-machine "farm" is really getting to be a major pain in the a**. I'm going to attempt to chop it down to 2 in the fall - we'll see how that goes...)
I wonder if this is one of the "challenges" Golem mentioned a couple of weeks ago. Perhaps they're trying to find new ways of keeping common sample in RAM between projects, or something. At any rate, I'm sure the difficulties they're having are related to sufficiently huge VI templates. I don't imagine they're beating themselves up over trying to load 4GB instead of 3! [;)]

    J.

  • Or you could keep the samples loaded if they're running outside the DAW. And in fact DP does keep them loaded. Logic doesn't, except with EXS.

Right now the problem is that we need a couple or few machines to have a good-sized template loaded; I just see loading time as another part of the memory access puzzle.
