    I've read all kinds of nice things about the performance of the VSL VIs on the new MacPros.

    ...and lots of issues elsewhere saying the host apps (Logic/DP) are much buggier on the MacIntels as compared to the G5s.

    So, for those who've used them on both...assuming the RAM in either was 4-6GB...is there a significant performance diff in the Intels with regards to the performance of the VIs?

    I'm going to say yes considering I loaded some VI's into my g5 before I got the intelmac.

    The Intel is noticably faster. Way faster.

    Now as far as bugs?

    They only one I get is if I load too many VI's into over roughly 3gb of RAM. Becuase of the 32-bit OS limitations I sometimes crash. That hopefully will be fixed with OS 10.5. Though logic also needs to be updated after that as well I think.

    I've also stuck with the previous OS update and not the new one avilable now JUST IN CASE. But I can compose fine as long as I quick save a lot for peace of mind.

    Agreed. The Intel also gets better instance counts even within the confines of 32-bit app limits.

    Crashes? OS glitches? I've surrendered to these being mere facts of life. Thank goodness such things are much rarer than they used to be.

    Again, I've found the performance of the whole house of cards to be much smoother -with VSL or other large sample libs - if you keep the loads in each program (including Logic) down and run stand-alone versions outside the DAW. That effectively eliminates the memory access problem too.

    How do you run VSL outside the host app? I mean, more than a single instrument? That would be great to have stand alones...heck, you should easily be able to load as many as you want in OSX if that were the case.

    The OS glitch/bug thing...here's the deal--if I'm gonna live with that, I'll stick with Cubase/Windows. I'm typing on an iBook that hasn't been rebooted in years. It's not the OS's fault if Logic/DP/VSL are glitchy and crash prone, IMO.

    In the past, I've paid a ton more for Apples in order to set it/forget it/rarely glitch. Now, ALL I read is how Logic's now glitchy with respect to MIDI timing now(since v7)...and DP5 works way smoother with it's mature PPC code.

    My plan was to limp along on my current PC until the fall OS release/MP refresh, and make the move back to Apple. I'll have to keep an eye out to see if it's even worth it. I'll tell you that if I'm gonna live with glitchy performance, I'll stick with a $1k PC over a $3k Mac.

    Seems pretty unanimous here that intels are working better on VSL. So, I'll just keep an eye out for the stability of the hosts to improve.
