    Dietz et al,

    I wonder wether you can give me any advice on the following,

    1) Is MIR likely or unlikely to be released within the next 12 months?
    2) Will the price range be within 500 to 1000 euros or is it likley to be considerably higher?
    3) Is MIR being designed to be run on it's own dedicated computer?
    4) Am I likely or unlikley to be able to run MIR on my single Core2Duo PC along with my other audio software and say up to 20 VIs?
    5) Would you advise someone like myself (a keen amateur) to go with something like Altiverb instead at this time?

    Thanks for any answers you can give?

    [note] All speculation and guesses based on previous comments (That's what you get when you don't update the mob regularily :p)

    1) I would be suprised if it were released before next summer.
    2) Definately higher. There may be a light version which is cheaper and requires less power.
    3) Yes... Simply because thats what it takes, and no computer can yet do the calculations MIR requires.
    4) See above.
    5) Based on your questions regarding price and time, then I would personally advise you to go with Altiverb.

    Well thanks for the speculation but it is not "the" answer and whilst I suspect your speculation will be close to the truth I would have liked and would still like an official response if that were possible.

    Or an acknowledgement that VSL are not prepared to answer at this time.

    Dave I would have thought if they were prepared to answer they would have. Clearly they have to their reasons to not answer further at this time, and obviously the project is in development. These things take time. I would prefer that VSL can develope MIR without too much pressure from users, and get it right. After all in reality software is an art, and MIR is a complex instrument, you don't rush a great piano make or violin maker, you give them space and time [:)]

    Although there's nothing wrong with asking, just saying be fair on them that's all it's not like they're lazy over in Vienna you know.

    Me I'm ever patient and have only the greatest of respect for the VSL team. I'm also in no hurry for an offical answer as I shan't be in a pecuniary position to buy Altiverb for two pay cheques. Next pay cheque is Special Brass and see how patient I've been for my Euphonium. They did it specially for me you know. [[;)]]

    I just didn't want VSL to think I had accepted Christian's speculation as "the" answer.

    I was wondering if they could make MIR to run on a dedicated DSP card, that you plug into your PCIe slots. They couldput whatever processor and memory they want on their card and it would be made just for MIR? A bit like the UAD cards.

    This would be a great option as users could just plug in the card without the need for another computer.

    Is this possible? I know I would be willing to pay a bit extra for the card with the software.

    hehe, *a bit* might be not enough - what could be taken into consideration is something like this which is currently priced about USD 8.000.- (naked, so to speak) ... still willing?

    We have considered this option carefully in the first stages of our development, but we decided to make the MIR as scaleable as possible by using common CPUs. This way, your investment isn't bound to get obsolete, as you can always jump to the next generation of processors, while still using the previous one for other tasks.

    Thanks Dietz - Altiverb it is at this stage then - it sounds like MIR will be one awsome piece of gear - I've no doubt you're gonna take the virtual music world by storm. [H]
