The Vienna Instruments don´t need any Performance Tool, as it has been inplemented on the lowest organisation level (the patches) already. It is a very convenient, intuitive and powerful tool that runs as an AU/VST instrument on both WinXP and Mac OSX (10.4 or higher). All samples are 24 bit quality, but due to realtime lossless decompression the samples only take the space of 16 bit samples (both on your harddrive and in your RAM).

Many new samples (fast legatos, Performance Trills and other additional articulations) are included in the new instruments, and many samples have been re-edited to make them even more comfortable to use [:)]

Hi Paul, thank you very much for your prompt reply.

If the samples have been upgraded, does it mean that I could start my collection without considering the previous editions?

In other words, when I look at the available products I get confused between what's included in the Horizon, first and PRO edition packages.

But if these are now gradually being "bettered" with the release of the "Instruments" collection, should I even look at them?

I guess my question can be expressed better by simply saying:
"if one buys all the instruments, would he get the complete available library package or should he buy also the PRO edition?"

all samples contained in the First & Pro Edition and the Horizon Series are contained in the new Vienna Instruments collections (2 exceptions: the guitars: Overdrive and Concert Guitar).

You should definitely look at the VI collections!

Thanks Paul, you have no idea how your words make my selection proces easier. And since I am not interested in the guitar collections (well....for now) it is INSTRUMENTS ALL THE WAY!!!!!!

Can't wait to get my hands on it. I have 4 years of works rendered on my Roland XV5080 that should absolutely fly with the VSL!!!

Albeit VI Software is not a sampler, can it load the articulations from the Pro Edition or would one have to run VI as well as GS3?

VI loads Vienna Instruments; GS3 loads Pro Edition. There is no crossover in sample loading terms.

The instruments win out in terms of ease of use and the RAM optimization functions make them more useable on a single machine.

The only word of caution I have is that they're WAY more money...because the standard instruments don't seem to have but say half the samples of the Giga versions...while the extended versions take the full Giga lib and expand it even further.

So...for example--Chamber Strings for Giga is $650. To get the same amount of articulations (plus some more) you must spend upwards of $1200 on the extended library. As a teaser, you get to demo the extended version with purchase of standard so that you can see all you're missing. Nice sales technique. [;)]

I'm glad I switched over to the instruments...however disappointed I am at what I lost articulationwise in the switch.

just for completeness: horizon series chamber strings have ~32.000 samples, whereas the VI chamber strings have ~59.000 ... so this should be way more than *some* ... the VI standard library has actually ~21.500
