  • Performance Tool Enhancements?

I've been trying to learn how to create a Finale plug-in to enhance playback with VSL and other massive orchestral libraries but have found the plug-in development documentation to be attrocious.

I've concluded that it would probably be easiest to create a performance tool-like applciation but to work with more than just legatos. I can think of a host of features to add to something like this that would be relatiely easy to implement, and would allow Finale and Sibelius to both work with VSL in a much better way.

Would it be possible, therefore, to open source the performance tool to allow people like me to make thier own additions to it? I'd be happy to describe what I want to do in more detail if you're interested. I think it would make more sense to add to an already very good tool than to build one from the ground up.

    What do you think?

  • peter, for some reasons it is not the time to open the source (which is not a big secret, btw) to the public - and i'd ask you and probably others to consider and understand why.
the tool and it's functionality is still in progress, be it other possible platforms, problems regarding implementation on current supported platforms or upcuming features.
i've experienced on various occasions it has two sides to open a project and having many developers working on often diametric ideas on the same thing before it comes into a state, where certain decisions are worked out. many of such projects died before they even had a chance to grow.
so let's call the performance tool an open but controlled project - please feel free to share your ideas and suggestions with our developers at tools@vsl.co.at
thank you for taking the time and contributing, christian

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • Christian,
Thanks, I understand very well why you would be reluctant to open source it. Personally I always hate open sourcing anything I create!

Still I wish there was a good example of something like it I could use as a skeleton for my own "performance tool." Please don't get me wrong, I'd be happy to send you some suggestions, but I also enjoy programming and want to try to pursue some of my own ideas as well.

  • I just had an epiphany last night - I was thinking for some crazy reason that a MIDI performance tool needed to be a MIDI driver in order to receive messsages from software, and then I figured out what a Yoke was for! The Yoke redirects midi messages from the sequencer to the Tool, and the Tool processes them as a Midi Input program just as though they were coming from an external keyboard. Genius.

PS - I'm assuming the VSL tool works this way. The QL Voice of the Apocalypse tool certainly does.
