  • Need help with Forte (using VI) crashing

Anyone, using Forte on a Windows XP computer, having the same problem?

Forte is crashing quite easy. Usally it starts with notes of an accord are not played. Then, when opening the VI, Forte crashes telling me something about an "UnhandledExeptionFilter encountered
    Exceptione code: C0000005 ACCESS_VIOLATION
    Fault address: 0388A8D B 01: 002598DB C:\\Programme\\VI-Plugins\\Vienna Instruments.dll

    Register:
    EXX:000000000....."

I´ve been to the brainspawn forum and it seems that this is more a plugin problem than a forte-problem.

    Has anyone a solution?

  • Hi,

have you tried Cantabile? Much cheaper and rock staeady!
You can find it on: http://www.toptensoftware.com/cantabile/
I am a very happy user of this VST host.

  • Hi Felix. I use VI's with Forte on Win XP Pro but haven't encountered this problem. Does the VI work OK if you use it standalone? Have you mentioned the problem to Forte tech support? They were very helpful when I had a minor problem.

  • Hi Felix,

are you on XP SP2? Which version of the VI and Syncrosoft LCC are you using? Please make sure it is the latest version.

From what you´re saying, it seems like it used to work, right? Did you install anything else before Forte started crashing?

The more information you can provide us with, the easier it will be to find out what´s wrong....

    Best,

  • Hi Guys, thanks for the quick answers.

@ Paul: I´m using Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2

    I have all newest versions.

It did not work fine from the beginning, but the crashes are really often (about 3 min. after every start) since I installed the Orchestral Strings II. Didn´t install anything else.

Sometimes forte had some problems finding some of the KB-6 or VC-8, so I reinstalled this library. But yesterday the message appeared again. The amount of crashes doesn´t change, no matter if this message appears or not. But could there be a relation, cause the vienna intruments.dll is causing the problem?

Here is one thing, happening mostly, before forte crashes:

Playing a e.g. VI-16 sus chord, some notes of the chord are stopped after about half a second, while others are played on. When I open the VI-Instance then, forte crashes.

I´m using about 6 Instances, some of which using the ram-optimize, so VI tells me, I have about 600 MB Ram free. But I got the slight feeling, that forte crashes more often, the more instances I use. So could there b a RAM - Problem? If yes, how do I check, if RAM is working fine?

    @ Conquer: I haven´t tried yet.

@ Erik: Thanks for the hint. I think I´ll have to give that a try.

  • Hi Felix,

how much RAM do you have in your computer? Did you check whether this behaviour also happens with just 1 VI loaded? When you play chords, do you have Velocity Xfade and RS on? This "eats" a lot of the polyphony capacity of the VI (1 tone would be 1 voice x 4 velocity layers + 4 Release Samples = 8 stereo voices), so that you can easily reach the polyphony limit of 64 stereo voices.

Did you enable the 3 GB switch for Forte?

If possible, make some tests with less samples loaded, so that we know more....

    Best,

    Paul

  • I have 2 GB RAM. So is there a use for the 3 GB switch? If yes, where is that switch?

Forte also crashes with 1 instrument, but not that often.

Xfade an RS are on. But shouldn´t I be able to play and hold more than 2 notes though?

    I´ll go on testing.

  • I´m not sure, if my problem is solved, but it seems like, cause I´m waiting for a crash quite a long time.

    So anyone having same problems:

I came from a gigastudio-setup and changed my System Memory Configuration in the Gigastudio Configuration Manager to "Preset 1 - Windows Xp Default".

I don´t now, if this was the solution or the clean-install of my backup-system, but it might help.

VI really doesn't like any of the Giga tweaks, so it is good that you got rid of them. I discovered this well over a year ago, so I hope that it is now in big letters in the install information, because it caused a problem on all my PCs.
