    Don't know what's causing this to happen but I'm getting a whining noise out of my G5 when running VI. The Appasionata library is on a Firewire La Cie 500 (I'm now thinking I should transfer that across to another internal 750Gb drive which should arrive today).

    I use Logic on 10.4.9. Dual proc 2.5Ghz G5.

    When I load a song with instances of VI, there's a whirring high freq noise coming out of the G5 as the data is being loaded. Disk utility verifies both disks as OK.

    Forgot to ask - if I transfer the Appasionata library across to another drive, what else do I have to do?

    Does the licence follow the data so to speak, or do I have to uninstall the whole thing and start the activation process all again?

    in any case you don't need to go through the activation process again, because the license is on your ViennaKey (license follows the key so to speak).
    sample data (the .dat-files) can be moved (including splitted) to any drive/volume after installation (of course you should avoid the harddisk where your system resides on or any drive used for recording).
    just run the directory manager, remove the old location and add the new one (preferrably using the drag&drop method) - see also the video tutorial

    This whining sound is driving me nuts. It stays on all the time on songs which use the VI. Even when nothing is happening (stop). The drives test OK. Other songs without VI do not cause any high pitch noise at all.

    Would it be better to have the library on a second internal drive rather than on the firewire 800? I hear what you say about the need to keep the VIs off any drive used for recording - is that because of the amount of traffic to and fro is too much? Does that still apply when the computer is idle, ie no recording or playback?

    i've already been thinking such a whining could reach your system via some bad grounding, but as you describe the details it makes me doubt that's a posible reason ...

    my comment above is referring to simultaneous write & read access to a harddisk only

    There is a brand of G5 (including but not limited to the 1.8 and 2.0 Duals of a few years ago) that has this issue. I know with regrettable certainty because I've faced it as long as I've owned my computer. It's variously experienced as whining, whirring, chirping, buzzing and beeping. Yeah, VI and Logic may trigger it, but it's a Mac issue.

    Assuming this is the problem, you'll have to load XCode, then CHUD on your Mac. That will give you a System Preferences option called "Processor," and in that pane you'll find an "Allow Nap" checkbox. Uncheck it. The sound will stop immediately. Apple does not endorse this fix.

    Thanks Plowman, but that ain't it. The chirping you refer to I've already fixed with CHUD. The noise I'm getting goes up and down with activity of the drive and it only comes on when VI is loaded up.

    Hi there. A friend of mine has a dual processor 2.5Ghz Mac G5 and its fans get very noisy when the processor is busy (for example, when Logic is performing an off-line bounce). At first the noise bothered him a lot but as it doesn't happen all the time he has grown used to it. Is the sound you refer to fan noise, or is it an audio whine coming out of your soundcard? How much RAM do you have in the machine?

    I would guess that installing the samples on a second internal drive rather than an external FW drive would improve performance.

    jrm1, can't you just replace the whiney hard drive under warranty?

    The drives are all well past their warranty. The noise doesn't go up and down like the fan noise (I'm also used to that). It's a tinny harsh sound a bit like an old CRT monitor. I'll install the VIs on another internal.
