    I've got everything authorized and ready to go but when I go to the add instruments track in DP5 there's no VI. All my other inst. show up.

    So I tried opening the standalone and got this error message:
    Custom Data Folder is inaccessible. Please use Directory Manager to specify a new Custom Data Folder.

    Does that have anything to do with the problem? How do I get started?

    Somehow I got the standalone open. But still nothing shows up in DP.

    Hey Neal:

    Try trashing your Digital Performer Preferences:

    User Library> Preferences (folder)> Digital Performer (folder)> Preferences (file).

    Doing this will cause DP to do a fresh scan of your Audio Units when you reboot. It will write a new Preferences file automatically.

    In your Vienna Directory Manager, you may specify a user directory of your choice (being a folder for your custom setups) at the bottom of the window.

    Make sure you highlight and drag all of your samples from your sample drive(s) into the Directory Manager window. You may have already done this.

    Repair disk permissions using OSX Disk Utility.

    Shut down the computer for a couple of minutes and reboot everything. Hopefully, that should jumpstart VI and DP for you.

    What version of DP5 are you using? 5.11 is highly recommended. Because of changes with SDII file extensions 5.12, some users are having trouble which are still being sorted out. I'd say to hold off on 5.12 for a while longer.

    Now that you mention Audio Units, I recall starting up DP after the instalation and it told me one plug in didn't load or something. I ignored this but that sounds like the problem.

    I'm using DP 5.11. Thanks for the tip about 5.12.

    I can't get to my studio till tomorrow. Hopefully your post will solve it.

    DP will look for MAS plugins, and where a MAS version and an AU version co-exist (such as M5) it will skip the AU inspection and choose the MAS version-- unless you remove the MAS '.bundle' file form the MAS folder. In this case, it will inspect the AU version upon reboot.

    I know VSL has nothing to do with MAS, but I thought I'd mention it just the same in case one quirk leads you on a wild goose chase. You should, however, read your Audio Unit Info Cache to see which plugin was skipped. Should that VI also be on your system in MAS form, this would explain why the AU inspection for that plugin was skipped.

    If the skipped AU is related to VSL-VI, then a reinstall or update of the VSL-VI components would be the next step. But try the other steps first.

    OK.

    I trashed the Audio Units Prefs. Restarted. And here's what happened:

    Booted up DP. While it was checking the AUs two times there was a very quick dialogue box that looked like it was from VI. It went by too fast to read but it had the same look as the error dialog I got about the Custom Folder.

    When DP was done, it said there was a serious problem with one of the AU.
    VI still didn't show up in DP so that must be the AU that's got the serioius problem.

    I've repaired permissions and still no go.

    What should I try now?

    Oh yeah, I also checked the folder for the "Custom Folder" and it IS read and write enabled.

    Wow. This is weird.

    I reinstalled the software only.

    Then trashed the AU Prefs again and started DP. I still got the message that 1 AU was skipped because it had problems.

    BUT, when DP opened, there was VI!

    Don't know why it's there even though I got the error. But I'm going to be trying it out now and see if all's okay.

    Glad you got it working again.

    I am very curious now about what AU was not working properly.

    Go to your User Directory> Documents (folder) and look for a file called:

    "MOTU AU Test Results.txt"

    This document is exactly what it says: the test results of your last AU exam. It should look like this (although I do not have VI installed on the computer I'm using now...).

    It is likely that because you have started your AU Exam a few times that you will see "Start AU Examination" several times.

    Can you please copy/paste in the topmost group of your AU Exam results here in a post, stopping at the line just above your second "Start AU Examination"? This should represent your most recent AU test results.

    If an AU has failed the examination, it will be listed in this file.

    That's just the last test.

    I've got a bunch more AU pluggins but they don't show up in this last test. They all passed before so maybe that's why??

    Hmm. If DP is doing a new exam, it should flag all of the '.components' in your AU folder.

    Once again, if your other AUs which are not listed are also installed under MAS, they will not appear on the AU exam by automatic default.

    What's really odd to me is that your last AU Exam indeed shows VSL-VI as having failed-- but then you say it actually loaded!!

    I would leave it alone for the moment, but at some point DP will look at the AU Info Cache and may likely convince itself that VSL-VI ought not be working.

    Just be prepared to remove the AU Info Cache file if the problem comes up again. There' *is* a measure of comfort in knowing that all of your AUs have passed the exam.

    You should also be aware that Syncrosoft itself can be a nemysis in this process as well. There will be occasions when it just won't kick in for reasons unknown.
