  • How to get bow sound in cello & bass

    Hi guys,

I have the Appassionata Strings and the SE, and I'm wondering if this is possible:

I'd like to find & enhance the sound of the bow dragging in the cello & bass samples. I'm trying to do a very soft passage with low strings, and I'm dying to coax out that "dragged bow" breathiness.

Is it possible? Anyone got any tricks?

    Kerry

  • 3 things I can suggest:

    1. Add Marteen's free stage noise (do a web search I don't have the link) be sure to send it to the verb as well.

    2. Use EQ to enhance the very highs - maybe even expirment with an exciter.

    3. Layer in some con sordino strings which have more airiness.

  • Layering staccato or sfz samples over the sustains (at around vol. 70) will bring out the bow attack noise, if not the breathiness.

  • Unfortunately, those won't allow a steady, consistent bowing sound in a legato line. What I'm aiming for is, for example, to be able to hold down a single note for 10 seconds, and to hear the bow dragging for that entire time. I'm wondering if that sound is built into the Appassionata's or the VI SE somewhere?

    Hi Kerry
I don't know whether it works with appassionata or not...

    Try as well...
Take the basses of the Orchestra- or of the Chamber Strings to your Appssionatas too > bring them to "sirrr" with an EQ or a exiter and add only high frequencies (the sirrrr of the bows) to the appassionatas.

    All the best

  • Beat, I'll give it a shot and report back -- thanks for the tip!
