  • Cubase with Vienna Instruments ?

    Hello,

I'm French, please excuse my poor language.
I'm a classic composer, and I'm looking for buy a choose of Vienna Instruments to compose some films music and combination projects of Vienna Instruments with real performers...

I think choose : Appassionata strings, Woodwinds 1 & 2, Harps, Brass 1 and Percussion.

In system requirements, it's required a VST compatible host.
So, I think that I'll use Cubase. Am I right ? Cubase is it fully compatible with Vienna Instruments ? Which version of Cubase (Studio 4 or Cubase 4) ?
There is an explain in vienna instruments manual to how make that 2 software work together (I'm relatively newbie in sound PAO) ?

To finish, do i must have a sound card to use vienna instruments ?
(I think to connect my midi keyboard with and usb midi-hub)

    Thanks for your answer.
    "Cordialement."

  • welcome Powa87, first things first ...
the Vienna Instruments Software is available for PC and apple computers, recommended is windows XP, minimum OS X version is 10.4.x (runs on PPC and intel macs).
for PC it can be used as VST (so you would need a host) or stand-alone, for mac it is AU, VST and stand-alone.
if you decide to use cubase it's fine - the cubase studio is just a *light* version, IIRC limited to 32 tracks - no difference regarding VST, you just insert a VI into a track.

a dedicated soundcard is not neccessarily needed, but you might wamt to have one (regarding latency, quality and available outputs)

your master keyboard is usually connected using MIDI, so you would need a midi input on your computer - this can be a possibly available MPU 401 onboard device or - again - a dedicated interface. there are keyboards connected directly using USB for which you wouldn't need a seperate midi input.

in any case the midi signal has to be directed to your sequencer (resp. a certain track in your sequencer) and this track has an inserted VI instance then.

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • Thanks very much "cm".

    First, my configuration is :
    Asus P5B-E
    Intel E6300
    2gb Ram PC6400
    GeForce 7950GT 512mo DDR3
    Windows XP SP2

I think to buy in Terratec Phase 22 soundcard. Could you give me your advice ?

So, if I don't take Cubase, do Vst in stand-alone mode offer possibilities to manipulate audio track recorded, add reverb etc, like cubase ?

Regarding Master Keyboard, which could you advise me, in 88's keys (I just need pitch & volume modulator) ?

    Thanks !

  • i recently purchased a terratec phase 24 FW because the specs are looking well and the price is tempting, unfortunately had not too much chance to have someone listening to the sound with better ears than mine ...
i think the keyboard is also more a matter of taste than arguing with simple technical specs ... others might jump in ...

  • hi powa,

just been on this forum since today... so i think i am to late... in case of not:
better dont buy a terratec-card!!! i had 2, and friends of mine also used terratec and they all had problems with drivers.

the most cost effective audio devices to me are "maudio" in all sizes. they have a good latency and the sound quality is good.

masterkeyboard... always depends... fatar has good very very cheap 88 weighted keys... the best is definetly doepfer

hopefully at the time you read this, you have a good running system, enjoying your vsl.
