    Hi Forum,

    I've just bought and installed the VI SE two days ago. After the usual frustration of getting soundcards, Cubase and VI to all talk together, I did achieve nirvana last night...wow, this truly is a great product.

    One specific question I do have however. During the in-store demo of VI I was quite impressed with the trills and run capabilities within VI. However, I cannot find them on my Special Edition (standard but not the extended). Are these functionalities only available in the "higher end" VI packages (I probably wasn't paying attention during the in-store demo)?

    As a compliment to the VI folks, I'm very impressed with the moderators in these forums. They seem to be very active and helpful.

    You´re right, there are no runs or trills included in the Special Edition. You can of course find these features with the "bigger" collections of the Vienna Instruments.

    You will however find that using the legato articulation will often yeild very useable trills and runs.

    I just want to mention that the forum for Vienna Instruments is the best I have seen and now experienced. Most other forums are full of people who are more interested in intellectually bulldosing people around then actually offering help in a friendly tone...wie man sagt "Wien ist anderes"!

    The fact that the moderator personally response to what I am sure is a very basic question and one that he/she has answered a thousands times, well, it speaks extremely well for the customer orientation of this company.

    Aside from the obvious missing articulations, could you elaborate on the difference say between the SE Violins Sustained and the Full Edition Violin Sustains? Are there less velocity layers? Are the samples non-chromatic? I'm just curious since I can't peek behind the curtains as I generally can with EXS24 or Kontakt. Don't be afraid of spilling the beans, I think most people realize that SE is going to contain less actual samples that the higher priced versions!

    Herb has said elsewhere that the samples used in SE are non-chromatic.

    i think several questions can be answered by comparing the articulation lists of both products, in case of violins(14) this and this

    The links that you point to are not good comparisons, the information presented is not what I'm interested in. For example, VSL SE appears to have 3 velocity layers, but how many velocity layers are present in the full libraries? And even though VSL SE is not chromatic, every how many notes are the samples mapped? There definitely seems to be some secrecy surrounding what exactly is in these instruments.

    The SE samples are mapped in tone intervals. See http://community.vsl.co.at/viewtopic.php?t=10997&iframe=true for a discussion on velocity layers.

    The velocity info for all instruments is shown in the product manuals, which registered users can download on this site from USER AREA / DOWNLOADS / MANUALS.

    IMHO non-chromatic sampling is acceptable. Fewer velocity layers obviously means less potential for dynamic expression, but three layers is usually workable.
