  • Vista OK ? Real Live experience

    Hi there,

okay so I'm getting closer and closer to my purchase but I still have one question.

I already read the threads about Vista on these forums but all of them were actually before Vista was released and speculation.

I'd like to know if some of you use the VI with Vista and how it is compare to XP (only for VI)

I'm going to buy a new PC with the VI and most of them ship with Vista. So I'm wondering if I would not be better to custom build my PC with an XP version instead.

    Thanks!

  • I'm curious about this myself but I assume the majority haven't made the transition yet. Personally I can't even work with Vista yet since my USB MIDI interface doesn't have a working driver.

  • I am currently using Windows XP (32 Bit) with 4GB installed. In practice
only about 3GB can be used (with the /3GB switch in BOOT.INI).
In Cubase SX I can load about 2.7GB of samples before I run into trouble.

Last week I tried to install Windows Vista (32 Bit). All seems to work,
but I can only load about 1.7GB before Cubase crashes. I have no idea
why there is such a big difference. Didn't find a a 3GB switch for Vista. Another possible source for trouble could be that additional 512MB of
"Shared Memory" are listed in the properties of my graphics card, though
it already has 256MB dedicated memory. Maybe this reduces the available
address space for applications (I wish I found a way to disable this to check
    whether it makes a difference)

The bottom line is that probably it only makes sense to consider Vista 64 Bit, but then we need to wait for better support by the hard- and software
    vendors.

  • Because Vista needs 1-2GB of RAM to operate.

  • Just a short update: I finally found the equivalent to XP's 3GB switch in Vista:

    bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVA 3072

(from the command line, with Admin privileges, search the web for "IncreaseUserVA" for more info)

Now I can load about the same number of samples in Vista as with my XP configuration (about 2.7GB total in Cubase).
And this was even with Aero enabled, needs more testing though...

Still I do not see a good reason to upgrade to Vista (32 Bit), but with a new
PC you might be stuck with Vista instead of XP.
