    I've been using the app strings perf legato a lot lately on a new score and I'm running into a release issue. I have the releases set to speed which works fine, but once in a while I have a problem with the last note cuting off. This doesn't happen all the time, nor on all the sections, just once in a while in one of the sections. When I have an issue and watch the release being controlled by speed, I can see that the slider will drop all the way down to the bottom and stay there. At the end of the note (usually a long sustained note being faded by expression) it will end adbruptly without the me hearing the release sample. Also, I do have the release samples engaged on all the VI.

    Sometimes I can manually drag the release fader up and it when I run it again, it will work fine, but mostly I get the abrupt end.

    My work around has been to take the offending section out of speed control and set the release manually. Then I punch in on the last note to get the ending.

    I know this isn't right. I thought that the release should go to full release with no other new note to engage it.

    Am I wrong here? Am I missing something?

    Hello again - seems to me the REL fader in the Perf Control window shows the preset's global Master Release (as in ADSR) setting, not the dieaway speed of the release samples.

    I loaded an App violins perf legato patch, put this REL fader under Speed control, programmed a passage consisting of eight 16th notes followed by two long notes and looped it. (I had to select INVERT to make the fast notes play with fast releases, I assume you do this too?) The Master Release fader followed the playing speed with 100% accuracy, showing low release settings for fast notes and high values for slow ones. Whenever I stopped the sequence, the fader stayed in its current position.

    However, this method of varying the ADSR release has a logistical drawback: the VI recognises the playing speed of notes by detecting the speed at which one note follows another. That means that the first long note (which comes in immediately after the last 16th note) is seen as a fast note, so it gets a fast release. The second long note is recognised as a slower event and gets a long release. But when the 16th notes start again, the first one of them also gets a slow release because the note which proceeds it is long.

    I don't know if this throws any light on the problem you're experiencing, but due to the discrepancies outlined above, this approach didn't sound musically convincing to me.

    I've played around with the invert and various settings. The problem is that with the the last note of each phrase, the rel is not staying up at all. It drops all the way down.
    If it's staying up for you, then maybe there is something buggy going on in my rig.

    Have you tried an entire passges of just long notes such as half and whole notes or even notes that sustain through several bars? The speed worked better for me in some other passages that had shorter and faster tempo notes.

    For now, I'm either having to print what I have (provided it contains mixed lenght notes) and then punching into the audio track with the rel set manually. Or just not using the speed control for the entire passage.

    Kinda of bummer. I think the concept of the speed control is great. I'm just seeing that it doesn't really do it as well as I had hoped.

    Anyone else care to comment about their results using speed control?

    Are you sure the dropping down isn't caused by a new note coming in? Does this phenomenon happen when the track in question is solo'd?

    Only a hunch, but I have a feeling there's a simpler explanation! I'm happy to experiment more in an attempt to find the reason for this but first I'd appreciate it if you described exactly how you've got the speed / release control set up, whether 'invert' is selected, etc. Please spell it out for me in idiot*-proof language so there's no ambiguity.
