    Obviously SE has far fewer articulations. But the ones that it DOES have, are they the exact same quality and playability as the cube?

    Also, no Universal Mode in SE, but you can still design your own matrices with varying articulations in SE? Would I be able to get a solo violin to play the same way I hear in the VI Solo Strings demo?

    Hi Eric,

    the samples in the Special Edition are in whole tone steps to fit more samples into the package. Otherwise they are exactly the same as in the corresponding bigger collections, so that you get the same quality [:)]

    And yes, you also get the full functionality of the Vienna Instruments player with the Special Edition.
    You will get very far with the Special Edition Violin, but of course the Solo Violin contained in the Solo Strings VI collection contains around 40.000 samples and a lot more articulations than the one in the Special Edition..... that were of course featured in the demos.

    Eric, as a do all library, SE is very very good. The performance legatos along justify the cost of the standard library. The other thing is that the DVD set comes with the extended set. You get a temporary unlock code with the Vienna key or else Christian will send you a temp license for the Steinberg Key (as was my case). Now I think I'll have to buy that too as I am getting spoiled using the saxes and extra articulations.

    Is it the be all end all of orchestral sample libs? Well, I think I can "yes". There's so much flexibility and control you have with the VI instruments. HOWEVER, I find using Logic more efficient than Digita Performer (the freeze function is so much better). I'm running SE on an Intel iMac 1.83 ghz w. 1.25 gigs of RAM. Prett modest but the examples I've composed all ran off of that computer with no freezing.

    actually, most of them are NOT the same since the special edition provides less layers (3 compared to 4-6 in the full libraries). in contrast to the whole-tone sampling mentioned by paul, this makes in my opinion a huge difference. for the ensembles usually the p-layers are missing so that the overall sound is harder and for many solo instruments the reduced number of layers leads to audible dynamics steps. therefore, i only use the special edition where i do not have the full versions (from the old opus libraries). the performance legato instruments are as far as i can see no reduced versions and it is nice that they are included for all instruments.

    I guess for me, coming into this just from the bundled VSL instruments from Kontakt 2, I'm thrilled and delighted. I have so many other orchestral sample libs that I could always punt and use say, the brass on EW Gold or SAM if I needed. But the legatos were the main reason I bought this library. Nothing comes close to them from any other lib on the market in my opinion.
