  • The library file [.dat] question

    Hi,
I am thinking about getting an imac to work along side with my G5, that imac will especially run VSL only. So my question is:
    - to avoid long time waiting if re-install from DVD, can I just copy all .dat file via network [of course after I copy all dat files, I'll have to re-setupdirectory manager]
    Will it work?
A side question, how can I run multiple VSL [in a same computer] for multitrack work? the stand alone will only get me 1 midi channel. So, V-stack is the only solution?
    Thanks
    Son Ngo

  • Yes, copying the .dat files will work the way you want.

To use multiple instances on a mac you need an audio unit host. Any sequencer will do that, as well as a few other programs, like Plogue Bidule.

  • Thanks for the response!
About the software, are you sure any software will do multitracking? What i need is a software can act like a multi channel Midi and it will be slave to Logic with another G5, on Logic, i select channel number, then load external plug-in, select the I/O
I used V-stack before [it's now Mac as well], that's exactly what I will need, just wonder if there are anything better than that.
    Thanks
    Sonny

  • Well, Garageband is limited to one midi input at a time, but most professional sequencers should be able to do what you want. You can hook apps together with IAC which is a virtiual midi cable, You can create several of these in Audio Midi Setup.

  • I wonder if it's worth considering Logic Express as a 'slave' host. As i understand it, LE can 'plugin' to Logic Pro fairly seamlessly.

(Please, correct me if i'm wrong.)

  • I use Forte to run VI's on a slave PC. Works very well - only limitation I've found so far is it doesn't have pan controls.

A better alternative is if Logic Node supports VIs. I haven't used Logic in a long time and dont' own it anymore so I can't test this. Does nyone know?
