  • VI player: setting how much ram is used before streaming?

    Hello everyone,

Quick question about VI player. Is it possible to set how much samples are preloaded in ram before streaming from HD's, similar to kontakts DFD settings?

    Thanks

  • No, the preload buffersize is a fixed value.

  • Thank you for the quick reply! Are there any plans to add this feature? Or perhaps its not necessary?

I'm not a techie, but loading more of the samples in RAM would benefit slower HD's, allowing them to not have to stream as much data correct? Does it help with CPU performance in anyway? If so, this maybe a nice feature to add, as I usually seem to tax my system before I run out of RAM. Does unloading unused sample out of RAM help CPU performance at all? I dont see how it would, but thought I would ask anyway [:D]

Thanks again for your help, and please forgive my ignorance. It sometimes gets confusing knowing exactly how things work, but as they say knowledge is power, and I'm willing to learn!

  • It's a matter of stability. Dozenzs of parameters depend on the preload time. So it's a hardcoded feature in the deepest end of the streaming core engine.
Therefor I hardly believe that this will be altered in the near future.

  • IIRC one can configure the preload-size in kontakt (or was it halion?) - try that and you will understand why the VI does not give you this option.
the 64 kB buffer is an ideal value for several reasons, primary the sum of latencies in a system. buffer size of your soundcard needs already to be adjusted carefully.
