    Would it be possible for the current VI architecture to allow a mono playback mode?

    Positioning and panning monophonic sources usually gives more clarity to a mix then stereo tracks. This would double the amount of samples that we'd be able to load into memory and probably also increase the number of voices at playback.
    True, you wouldn't want use this method for large groups, like string sections, but all solo instruments would benefit.
