    Does VSL have any plans on making divisi samples for their VI string libraries?

    I think this would be a great addition for VI. It's really the only major thing missing from the libraries.

    My guess is they don't have any plans.
    Chamber strings sort of makes up for (small) divisi sections with its
    6 vi etc.

    Yes, the mixing and matching offers a few possibilities. Users have available violin(s) in combinations of 1, 6, 14, and 20. The "ones," of course, can be stacked for 2 or 3 (though sometimes phasing can be an issue).

    With violas, the choices are 1, 4, 10, and 14 instrument(s).

    Cellos are alotted as 1, 3, 8, and 12 instrument(s).

    Basses come in sizes of 1, 2, 6 and 10 instrument(s).

    So with all this available. divisi can be done. I have wondered if VSL will, with some new software, render an automatically dividing sound depending on the number of keys played, and perhaps add the sound of two or three violins to this end.

    The mixing and matching is not an ideal solution. Especially if different processing/signal flow was used in the creation of the different string libraries.

    I still think that a divisi library should be made. How about it VSL?

    I'm sure they could do it if they would consider it the right way to go. It would take the re-recording of a complete new library and require a different sample player. In the mean time you might want to take the sage advice of both Sapkiller and Plowman.
    Really - it works very good. The nice thing about the VSL way of doing it is that you can create different sounding string sections via the method of combining different libraries.

    IMHO the other system always sounds the same. Even smaller ensemble sizes still bear the unmistakable sonic footprint as the larger groupings. And what if you don't like that sound? What if everyone is using that sound on commercials & sound tracks? It will wear thin quickly .

    With VSL you can make an intimate ensemble with Chamber & Solo Strings, an intermediate size with multiple Chamber instruments, larger groups with Orchestral & Appassionata and when you add combinations of all of them you can come up with just the right sounds for many different composers. The combinations are endless.

    SF guy - divisi strings are already available in VSL. Through solo, chamber, orchestral and Appassionata articulations you can go from 1 to 6 to 14 to 21. and any mutiple of those, based upon what notes are being played. That is almost every situation that would occur in the literature of all orchestral music of the last 300 years, let alone film music of today.

    They are not automatic though. You have obviously been reading the hype put out by DVZ.

    I tend to look at that stuff with a grain of salt. Until we hear their sound, it is all just talk. Besides, i like being able to control these articulations, instead of having the computer do it for me. I don't trust computers... [[;)]]

    I appreciate all of the input.

    I am in the process of selecting my new sample libraries and am waying all of the pros and cons of each library before investing my $15,000.00

    That is a wise approach. The main thing is to listen to the actual SOUND of the samples, rather than automatic divisi switching, which is a relatively trivial element with most performances. The DVZ people are pushing that because it is their one hope of competing in a huge market, the "niche" they are trying to fill.

    I mix and match all the time, although granted, it's not an exact solution, it does work. You just have to use your ears. For instance the passion strings are at lower level than the others, some patches blend better than others bla bla etc.
