• Newb. confusion: Installation & XSKey

okay folks. forgive me im still totally new to this.

But i recently bought and registered VI Orch Strings I & II. Then i received an email saying:

thank you for registering.
your temporary code to enable the VSL performance tool is:

XXXXXXXX-XXXXXXXX-XXXXXXXX

we will keep you informed on how to permanently authorize
the performance tool within the next 26 weeks (this is
the period the tool will be activated on your XSkey).

please enter the activation code in the respective logic dialog,
this will result in a temporary activation on your XSkey

okay, first off, what on earth does my Logic XSKey have to do with VI? i mean, i already GOT a dongle for VI in the Vienna Key? Dual dongles? huh??

and secondly, it says if i enter the activation code ill get a temporary activation on my XSKey. well i havent yet done that, yet VI is still working. So what is it that i dont get here?

why does VI need to have a second authorization on another company's dongle? and whats with this "temporary" activation? i thought that once you U/L a license onto a dongle, it is irreversibly "burned" onto it? or is there a second "permanent activation code" i will later on get.

really guys, im sorry im such an idiot about this. i just dont want to accidentally do something the wrong way and screw up my ability to use VI. so what am i supposed to do here?

thanks in advance.

• mplaster, you received an activation code for the vsl performance tool because you have registered an EXS-library - the performance tool is a plugin within EXS and need an activation to work (although i have to admit only alternation mode would make sense for glass&stones)

since EXS comes with logicPro you have an XSkey and provided the XSkey number during registration - therefore you have received an activation code.

the licenses for Vienna Instruments orchestral strings I+II are downloaded to and held on your ViennaKey (both dongles might look similar, but are from different vendors) - the XSkey manager will not see the ViennaKey and vice versa the LCC will not see the XSkey.

• Thank you christian.

i guess i confused myself unnecessarily. so then, the XSKey activation code is for my EXS Collection (i had also purchased Glass & Stones) and that is completely independent of the Vienna Instruments, which are authorized seperately on the Vienna key? correct?

so then, do i now enter this "Temporary Activation Code" to my XSKey? i am just curious what the qualifier "Temporary" is in reference to. Will there be a permanent one to follow?

Thanks again. You moderators are unbelievably helpful and friendly! this is the most productive and helpful forum i've ever been a part of!

• the *temporary* has basically two reasons:
a) historical - in *former emagic times* all logic-related products came with a temporary activation. once you have registered you received the permanent authorization linked to your (now registered) XSkey
b) practical - temporary codes work with any XSkey, permanent ones only with a specific XSkey and (meanwhile) apple have to create it.

additionally it has the advantage that if someone returns a product (for online purchase possible within a certain timeframe) the license will expire somewhen and any remaining copy is almost useless.
