  • Using VI Live

    Hello
    Is there any thought of (in the future) giving the User the option of creating his own keymaps with VI. I use VI in my Mac book Pro and VSL Pro edition in Gigastudio 3 on my PC laptop for live purposes. I would like to omit the PC laptop but am unable to do so because I use custom keymaps of VSL Stings/ Brass/WWs etc. in Giga 3.

  • Not sure I'm with you on this one.
    You can build your own matrices and presets from patches and assign your
    own keylayout to them - or rearrange existing ones by rightclicking on
    a particular key assignment and reasign it using your keyboard.

  • I want to be able to set the split points of all instruments in the case where I need many insruments at certain ranges on 1 keyboard. Keep in mind, this is for live purposes. Giga 3 has a feature called "stack mode" which enables the user (when in stack properties) to determine each Instruments range/split point. Even if I need 1 or 2 keys on the keymap for a Tubular bell sample, I would like to have that flexibilty. VI has superior sounding samples in my opinion (among other things) and I would like to use them more. For me, if they added that feature it would fulfill my needs in a live context. Thanks for your thoughts.

  • What keyboard and what host program are you using, moon? Those are probably the easiest places to set up zones.

    M-Audio Keystation ES. (to give my back a break) 1 for Vienna Instruments inside of Logic Pro 7.2 on a Mac BookPro, the other with Giga 3 on a Fujitsu laptop.

    just following up.
    the only way I can think of, is by setting up different Instrument tracks (ie.. F horns, cellos, violins woodwinds etc.) in Logic on different midi channels and set each zone to a different midi channel.
    but I don't think it would work with the M-audio keyboard because as far as I know it
    does not have any parameters to set up zones. Something like a Kurzweil 2500-2600
    would work but then my back will complain. Anyway, if you or anyone else has other ideas , please let me know.

  • Perhaps it's just me, but my sense is that the Cube collection is a different type of library for a less universal purpose, ie: pre-planned programming vs live usage.

    The speed setups are great, and I can see how they can easily be used live. But wouldn't want to deal with keyswitches live. The Perf Legato patches are fantastic-- but they're monophonic

    But when I think about the amount of time I spend tweaking and re-tweaking faders and controllers, I just can't imagine how many arms (and fortitude of back) it would take to really get the most out of these sounds--- the Expression fader and the X-Fader are at the center of my work. Accessing all of that and nailing the timing and the notes concurrently is something for a better person than I.

    I can recall those dog days on the road years ago using various synths, and employing breath controllers, expression pedals, pitch and mod wheels all in a crazy series of choreographed moves-- and was busier than I wanted to be-- and all of this was being used on ONE SINGLE PATCH!

    I can see five people doing a string or brass section, each on a different part. But with such a CPU-intensive library, it would be unthinkable to risk not having a linked redundancy setup for failsafe securty.

    If it can be done, is it worth it?

  • In Cubase, you could create a project with (example) 4 Instrument tracks.
    You can set all 4 tracks to "all channels" and use a MIDI plugin to filter notes outside of the desired range.
    E.g. That way track 2 can be set up so only C3 to E4 come thru to the instrument assigned to that track, and so forth for all the tracks.
    I assume Logic does have similar options?

  • If you are going live why not consider using a host program like Brainspawn forte, instead of using a sequencer.

    This would allow you to stack VSTi, DXi and rewire instruments, as well as VST FX in the one program.

    You can also set "scenes" for each song you perform.

    Plus it is not a sequencer, so you don't have to worry so much about it crashing in a live situation.

  • You can use Brainspawn's Forte VST to set up your own keymaps by limiting the MIDI range of each individual instance of the VI. The only drawback is that you'd have to open a new instance for each key zone. I have a feeling VSL will not adapt the VI to allow users to create their own keysplits - a shame, but fortunately there are ways round it. Can't think of an easy one in Logic though!
