    Perhaps a silly question, but...

    This appears automatically in Logic on one of the channel inserts while working with VI Cube. I'm not sure what it is.

    Klopf = to knock?
    Geist = a ghost or phantom?

    Can someone explain what a Klopf Geist is in the context of Logic, why it appears, what it does , and why it's necessary?

    It's actually the CLICK CLICK CLICK that you hear when you turn Logic's metronome on. It's not a real word with a direct translation, but Klopf itself means "knock." I think it's one of those words like "Farfegnuven".

    Interesting.

    I removed the KG and still got all the click I needed... that's what was so confusing. Nothing appeared to change after it was removed.

    But when I removed it, shouldn't the default click have stopped?

    No - in the Logic's metronome preference window, you can choose if the metronome is being generated by general midi or by the KlopfGeist. In your case, you are probably using GM instead of the KG.

    The cool thing with the KG is that you can monitor it and route it like a regular audio instrument.

    Hi,

    The Klopfgeist actually is a virtual instrument offering different sounds, implemented in Logic especially for clicktracks, whereas the "default" metronome/click uses the computers internal soundbank and speakers.

    This is probably why you can still hear the metronome after disabling Klopfgeist.
