    What is the difference between Volume and Expression?

    In some circumstances, none. However, you can think of Expression as a subset of Volume. If the Volume is set at 100%, then Expression is identical. If the Volume is set lower, then Expression will allow you to use much smaller increments of volume change. I tend to use Expression for er, expression and Volume for relative volume to other instruments (mixing).

    Of course, there are some products by other companies where volume doesn't work. In those situations you have to use Expression for both.

    There is no difference - both control volume in an identical way. However, as DG points out, many people use Volume to set an initial mix level and Expression to vary the volume of selected notes or passages.

    The difference between MIDI Volume and Expression is actually an important one. Both are continuous controllers affecting dynamic intensity, but, as DG points out, if Volume is set lower than 100%, then the Expression steps will be smaller than volume since both have 127 steps. Thus if MIDI volume is set to 90 as a default (that is 90 on the MIDI scale, not 90%) each Expression step will be .708 of a Volume step (90/127) resulting in smoother more subtle changes in dynamic intensity.

    And both apply to the instance, not to the actual cell, correct? Is there a way to have volume information (or similar) on a cell (articulation) rather than on the whole instance?

    In mixing, you set your levels with volume. With expression you move the volume up and down, but it never goes above the level you set with Volume.

    You can set the relative volume for a single Cell/Articulation in VI's Patch Assign by clicking on "Edit Cell", and save the edited Matrix in your Custom Folder.
