  • How to layer strings and change pitch of just one layer?

    How would I modify the pitch of one layer of strings for a fatter sound? In other words, I'm loading one patch in one slot on the vi, another string patch in the slot
    directly below the first one so that the the two patches are layered. I wanrt to detune the second patch slightly for a fuller sound. I can't seem to find a tuning adjustment
    for that one slot.

    Also if I run in parallel mode I can use a third string patch for even more fullness. Is this correct?

    If you own Cubase 4 then try the new VST3-effect "Clone".
    It will grant your wish just 4 times [[;)]]

    Another solution
    - Transpose the desired midi-track one half tone up. (two halftones with OPUS-libraries)

    - Create an audio file with this midi-track.

    - Then transpose (pitch down) back this audio file to the original key.
    ..Do this with the audio effect possibilities of your host program.
    ..Take the option "pitch -1 half tone/same length".

    - If you want: Do the same procedure by transposing the original midi track one half tone down ... and back.

    This procedure gives you a real 3 voice played result.
    Remark:
    If you play your original audio track several times but always with little detuned frequencies you will get not the same effect because the (detuned) sounds are always based on the same samples.
    Then it is a sort of a chorused effect - so to say - which is of course a possibility as well. > Use a Chorus/Ensemble - effect

    It's your friend "Frodo" from the other forum! [:D] I mention that because I suspect that you do not use Cubase, although that VST3 effect Clone thingy sounds quite nifty.

    There was another technique posted by another VSL user (Please forgive my momentary lapse of memory-- but I take no credit for this).

    Where violins require fattening, duplicate MIDI and VI data on another track and set it to a different channel (if I have this correct). Transpose the MIDI note data up 1/2 step, then put in a pitch bend number at the beginning of that track to bring it back down 1/2 step.

    Sounds redundant, but think about it-- transposing the track up 1/2 step means that different samples for the same notes will be triggered. The pitch bend indicator back down 1/2 step means the duplicate track will be in the same key as the original. The benefit of duplicating the track means than any expression data will also be duplicated.

    Another option I've used at times is to use a touch of violas to fatten up the violins. This supplimentary viola track is set up differently from the regular violas in that the pan and EQ are adjusted to be tucked and blended better with the violins to distinguish it from the actual viola track. This technique, of course, only works where instrument ranges are not an issue.

    In both cases, these techniques can be applied to other instruments as well-- violas to fatten cellos, violins to fatten violas, but in each case these supplimental tracks are to be sculpted and designed for a specific purpose and not to be used globally. So if your violas are supporting the violins then it is quite different for sonic reasons than violas suppoting cellos-- where you don't want the violas to sound like violas but to blend well with the instruments they are supporting.

    Of course, if you have Chamber Strings and Solo Strings, they both work quite well with Orch Strings to a similar, however a slightly different, effect.

    I also tend to wait until closer to the end of the tracking session (when all MIDI notes are in) before adding additional VI instances-- and often I just run some data out as audio in case my CPU/RAM resources are spent.

    Does that make sense?
