It's not because they want to do it this way or don't like the way other plug-in windows work. Obviously this is a necessary compromise related to the way the Vienna Instruments player really runs outside Logic.

My guess is that the AU plug-in is actually just a hook for streaming the player's audio into the progam and possibly routing MIDI from the host to it. The plug-in's interface is not the Vienna Instruments window, it's the little thing that says "click here to open the window." Is that an Apple Event? Don't ask me.

It's a nuisance, but it also means you can access a lot more RAM if it's installed, since the Vienna Instruments player doesn't use any of Logic's RAM. Plus you can run stand-alone instances in addition and access even more memory.

it is _very_ tricky to bring VI window into a host provided window on OSX.
we haven't succeded with good results so far.

I think the problem would be 98% better if you could just get the Vienna windows to stay open when you change screensets and come back, Chris. The rest of it isn't really significant.

But I'm sure you're way ahead of me.

Incidentally, is there a way to trigger Logic Meta events with an environment button to make this happen? I've never thought of a use for Meta events, but I'll have to think this through...

It's entirely possible I'm barking up the wrong tree, of course, since the windows are still outside Logic.

What if the VI interface instances populated a sort of "rack" outside Logic? I think what sometimes makes things confusing is the the VI doesn't seem to be an app outside Logic *or* a plugin -- it's sort of between the two, so it's sending "mixed messages", so to speak. This way, the plugin window in Logic could then just focus the rack (i.e, slide up or down) to the correct instance. It would be a bit like working with Reason in ReWire mode, but much more seamless as far as integration and setup goes.

I don't know Logic at all as I use only PCs and I am happy since I use the pivot option (90°) on my new 19" monitor. It is like having two 15" little monitors in one. I always work-with and look-at 2 programs in the same moment. And it takes the phisical space of 1 smaller monitor!
I think that as soon as 23" monitors will have a nice price, we will work even better!

semplicemente puoi girare il video di 90 gradi. Nella parte superiore ci metti il sequencer, in quella inferiore Vienna Instruments ed è come avere 2 piccoli monitors in uno. Li vedi entrambi e puoi cliccare senza che uno faccia sparire l'altro. Con programmi tipo Finale o Word hai una pagina che corrisponde allo schermo. E' una bellezza e più pratico che avere 2 monitor veri che occupano un sacco di spazio!
