  • A corrupt Logic song.

I post this only because I hadn't known it was possible until yesterday.

I spent the better part of the day trying to figure out why the piece I was working on was playing back so badly. It would crackle and stutter on playback, and eventually got so bad I had to stop. After a bit of messing around I noticed that it was _related_ to a growing sync problem between my two RME cards - one on a G5 and the other on a PC, talking and syncing by ADAT. (Though it didn't play perfectly even with the ADAT connection unplugged.)
I tried absolutely everything to fix it, without luck. Then I tried testing the two machines together with a clean, new session. It seemed fine. So I loaded up the song I was working on again... crackle, stutter, stutter... I should also mention that I started getting the "Problem syncing audio and midi" error in Logic.

So, I exported all the session's tracks as MIDI files, and took notes on the general setup of the entire piece (luckily I wasn't that far into it yet). I created a new project and duplicated all of my previous work, importing the MIDI, and so on.
It plays perfectly now. In fact, it almost seems better than other sessions I've been working on. Now I'm wondering a bit about some of my other song files...

Anyway, I'd never known a song to be semi-corrupted like this -- not enough to fail to load, but enough to effect playback. Very strange, and somewhat unnerving.
