    I just thought I'd bring up this (great) idea again. I think it was Nick who mentioned it a while ago, but please, could we get network (LAN that is) authentication of VI licenses? I've just spent all day trying to set up the template for a new piece I'm starting, but it's a huge pain in the a** because I have to figure out exactly how to divide up my VIs between my 3 machines. I've got enough RAM between them, but the way they're divided has to just right in order to get all the articulations I want online, and distributed properly.

    The solution? LAN-only network authentication of VI licenses. Install everything on all the machines. Then, just open what you need to use on whatever machine you need it on. Please, please, please...

    I second that.
    and it would also make it possible to start just 1 machine up
    if you wan't to do some initial work and still have access to all instruments.
    Instead of having to start up the entire network

    I would like to second this idea also. This has been a considerable issue in my studio, especially working in the PC world. Because of VI security architecture, I've had to build two more machines for the network. The product itself is excellent quality, but each additional library imposes costs for more computer hardware. We've estimated the cost for the entire cube here to be in the range of $30,000 US. So, we only purchase libraries when we can build the incremental software and hardware costs into our relatively small revenue stream. We also have more noise and heat to deal with, as well as added time requirements for system backups. I think the solution here has to deal with the environment issues that VI security imposes on its users. Perhaps Herb would be more interested in this if we were willing to pay him even more money for the priveledge of running on a specified group of machines. Otherwise, we'll have to wait until VI is ported to 64 bit.

    ok, so i have to slip into the role of the courier of bad news: this is unlikely to be seen in the forseeable future.
    why? all kinds of license servers are cracked.
    why? because it's easy to sniff network traffic.
    if you say now: clearly VSL wants to secure their property (what is obviously true) i reply: we want to secure your investment, what is probably not so obvious but all the more true ... sorry ...
    there is a possibility to translate this idea using another method, but it is not realized yet. if someone gets in (real) trouble - with the solo stirngs collection we might be already able to help you out individually. please don't strain this option.

    Hi Christian,

    I understand the reluctance to allow network authorizations. What I'm suggesting is that if you are comfortable with two part authentication for a single machine license on a single Vienna key, why not just give us the ability to download a license to a second key? Then we could parcel a library between two machines, and effectively utilize our available RAM.

    Synthogy, for example, allows concurrent licensing for three machines. I'm not saying you should adopt their security system, but I am saying their runtime flexibility recognizes the reality of the hardware constraints these types of VIs present.

    Or, as I said, you could just give me a 64 bit version.

    What about the idea of allowing the transfer of individual instruments between one key and another? In my case, this would also be a reasonable solution.
