I am a director of a very high level childrens percussion ensemble who uses two keyboard controllers call malletkats.

We perform large orchestral pieces live (Pines of rome, Estansia, Star Wars, etc)
that are arranged by established writers in the chicago area. I use four players on two malletkats to play string, trumpet, French horn, and trombone section parts. All other parts are performed on xylophones, marimbas, bells, and other percussion instruments accustically.
I have been using the Pro edition with gigastudio 3.0 for about a year and have had decent success with it. but since the intro of vienna instruments, I have been watching the forums and trying to determine if this product would work with my malletkats. Clearly it is designed for keyboard players.
My players hit the malletkat with a mallet and the midi signal is sent immediately.
In gigastudio, I stack a staccato sound and a sustain sound together. When the player plays a note and holds the pedal down he gets a sustained sound (along with the staccato sound of course). If not, he gets a short sound. This works reasonable well but obviously it has quite a few drawbacks as well.
Is there anyway the VI could work? speed control would be a god send if it would work with the malletkats. Especially with string sounds. Can the sustain pedal trigger the correct sample instead of holding down the keys of the keyboard?
These kids and this group are really special to me and I would really like to find a way to make this work. Any thoughts??
