  • VI's using only second Processor CPU in Logic

Hey, just noticed something odd in Logic. When I've got the VI's loaded, and reverb plug .. they're only using the second processor according to the system performance gauge.

The first processor is barely twitching .. any ideas what this could be or do you think it's a false reading from logic. With 8 VI's loaded my second CPU is showing 1/2 used .. so I'm guessing after 16 instances it's going to totally max out .. but the first processor remains free. Anyway to distribute the VI's amongst them better .. or should it be doing that anyways [:P]

  • Is anybody else having this .. only the second CPU being used thing .. I'm getting it all the time now .. and it's limiting how many EXS and VI instances I can have .. with the other processor pretty much untouched.

    Anyone?

I was talking to a friend of mine who uses a Quad. It is very confusing how cycles are distributed at times across mulit-processors. For some things, he says that his CPUs share an even load. At other times, the computer will use what it *thinks* are the most efficient resources.

It would be interesting to see what happens when you load up your Quad with more instances and how/if/when that data is distributed to your other processor(s). I have no definitive answer, but somehow I would think that as long as one processor is working at 50% you are not in bad shape.

Have you tried doing a stress test to get a better sense of how many instances can be loaded and how the processors kick in?

I've forwarded your question to my friend and am curious about what he has to say-- he's quite savvy with Macs in general and with the Quad in particular.

If you don't mind, I've also included my own question of his take on how Leopard might handle CPU cycles differently (for better or for worse) on PPC Quads. I'll post whatever answers I receive.

  • Hmm. I guess I haven't actually tired to max out the system with instances yet .. I had a problem when I had applied 5 reverbs, the second processor was red linng and causing audio dropouts .. whereas the First processor wasn't doing anything [:P]

I haven't seen this before I must admit .. when using normal EXS instances the loads were evenly spread accros the processors, so perhaps it's a VI thing.

Fortunately only using the Chamber strings I'm not likely to need a lot of VI instances, and I can probable have 2/3's of my normal 50 EXS instances back if I stay with just one main reverb.

By all means send along the question .. would like to know what a more expert mind has to say.
