  • New Machine question

I don't have a lot of experience with VI - but a question: will 3 X 500gb internal SATA drives inside a Mac Pro be enough / fast enough hard drive to run the symphonic cube? Or will further hard drives be required. This is a machine with 8gigs ram.

Next question: does the 8 megs get shared by logic and VI or do they share the same memory address - in other words is VI restricted to the memory limitations of logic or does it get it's own memory plus logic - so in other words will osx allow the combination of logic and VI to both use their possible share of the 8 gigs?

Just to add to the above - Can you run multiple instances of VI on the same machine therefore increasing ram access using Plogue Bidule and using Logic as your sequencer? Is that what people are doing to use more ram in their machine?

    This is not possible.

Unfortunately, as Maya replied, this is not possible. This is why, if you want to get the full power of VI, you have to use slaves (see my post here).

  • Thank you Maya and Jerome both for your timely responses. That answers my questions exactly.

I read your post the other day actually Jerome and it's very interesting what you are doing - what a great idea and very ingenius the way you put it together. How is the latency when playing live into the sequencer on that set up? That for me would be the main thing.

    Miklos.

  • For now, I have not noticed any major latency. The thing is, there is "too" much power in the Mac Minis for the VI. So you can lower your buffer a lot.

    Jerome

  • Now that IS good to know. I wonder what kind of buffer you can get away with in a xeon 3ghz? What buffer setting do you use that gives no noticable latency, I'm talking about the same kind of latency you would get out of a keyboard with it's on board sounds - no noticable latency?

  • Yup, that's what we were striking for and for now it's working as such!
