    Hello,

the composition of "The Darkness Project" - Music for piano and orchestra is final and now available on my web site

    http://web.mac.com/soenke.schnepel/

Based on its very large duration (nearly 60 minutes) I provide some extracts of it. You will also find some interesting notes to that project as well.

This music is contemporary orchestral music, very dramatic and bold.

    Any comments are appreciated.

    Best regards,

    Soenke Schnepel

  • Impressive ultra modern sound. This must have taken a tremendous amount of work! Good luck with it.

    Best,
    Jay

  • Indeed - quite impressive. And interesting to hear VSL in such a context.

  • Congratulations on this very interesting project. I would like to get an entire CD of this and feel you should sell it online at something like CDBaby.

I really agree with the principle behind this, and think it is important artistically that composers do this. I especially like the concept of not using VSL simply as a substitute for a live orchestra, but as an artistic medium - a basic way of creating art that cannot be done practically in any other way. Maybe the company is basically driven by commercial use in lower budget film/TV, but a tremendous, beneficial side effect is the creation of a new medium for serious artists.

  • Thanks Jay, Christian and William for your very kindly comments. I was myself a bit unsure to post this message in this forum since I know that that kind of music is mostly not used in conjunction with VSL, but then I thought it would be interesting to know what other users of VSL think about it.

Yes, this work was huge and sometimes I was feeling I would loose the plot but I had these ideas of that music for a such long time and I definitely believed over a long, long time that the only chance to get that project realized is to work with VSL. I had no other options and I'm glad today I did not give up.

As Wiilian said, the usage of the VSL as an artistic medium is definitely given and I wanted to prove that for myself since the beginning of my work. I had no doubt that this library can be used for such kind of contemporary music production although I did not know how much work I had to invested to realize everything I had in mind.

Today, I'm glad to say that VSL is practically an instrument which can be used also for such large projects, especially with the knowledge how much harder it is to realize that kind of project with a "real" orchestra.

BTW: Wiiliam, what is CDBaby? I will make sure to send you the complete music. Would be a download ok for you?

    Thanks,

  • CDBaby is an independent CD seller on the internet that anyone can send a CD in to sell. It doesn't have to be commercial.

Soenke I would love to download those, but you ought to be paid for your hard work! However I will contact you directly about that. Anyway I'm glad you put this on here.

  • "Nell'oscurità della notte e tutti i colori del buio"
(english: "In the obscurity of the night with all colors of darkness")

Spoken with brutal honesty. I like it somehow, maybe because i never heard anything that harsh before, well, sometimes in some movies it goes on similar like that. It is not occult, but very dark. It is certainly not white, but doesn't emanate negativ energy. Very original. Somehow like a steel factory instrumented.

Hard to say what impression it would make on me listen to the full 60 minute in one go. I wonder how an audience will react when you torture their ear channels with this instrumentation of brute force.
