    Having just read on another site about Digidesign buying out Sibelius with plans to integrate with PT, i don't suppose the VSL team would consider applying their considerable expertise to building a decent Notation program. Because there's no chance in the near future Sib will work with anything but PT, and i'm not willing to do that.

    Would you?

    Alex: at some point I was considering getting hold of Sibelius. In its current state, presumably it is eminently usable,so should I get it before the changeover, there would not be a problem. Regarding its inextricable marriage to PT: is that a definite, in which case, I'm assuming that means it will then only work for PT users? If so, that's pants! [6]

    I was definitely thinking of upgrading my Sib 2.1.1 system on the next update. Now I'm not so sure...

    It's worth checking out the articles posted at NS and VI for the press release. The assumption that Sib will be integrated with PT is mine, and not based on hard fact, but the 'instinct of the inevitable' if you like.
    I have Sib 3, which i refused to pay to upgrade because Sib 4 was stuff they should have fixed in 3. (IMHO).
    And still without hosting.

    Either way, i'm not going to waste a year of my life waiting to find out what i believe to be inevitable, so i'll look elsewhere for the next incarnation of a notation program. I absolutely refuse to use PT.

    I'm only sad that Steinberg can't take their notation components more seriously. If they did, at this time, it's possible they'd pick up a lot of Sib users. This is a real opportunity for them.

    I won't advise you which way to jump, my friend. Suffice to repeat, this is only my opinion, and my perception of what is to come.

    Funny you say that. I was hesistant to upgrade to 3 when the time came round, but it proved to be useful enough. 2.1. was definitely useable though.

    Would Digi be that stupid to limit the program to PT?! That would kill off tons of users. Pro tools users are the least notation type guys around. Many of them are old school engineer types. In the industry, by the time a file gets to the PT post production guys, any notation aspects are long gone.

    It has been stated that the next Sibelius upgrade is unaffected by the announcement.

    The thing to remember is that Digidesign is a primarily a hardware company, so they are not so much trying to win Sibelius customers to their product, but rather customers away from the other sequencer manufacturers. For example, in the UK most schools use Sibelius and Cubase. As Digi have stated that they want to get into the education market, I think that they are hoping that the preferred combination will become Sibelius and PT.

    Funny you say that. I was hesistant to upgrade to 3 when the time came round, but it proved to be useful enough. 2.1. was definitely useable though.

    Can't remember whether you have contemplated Geniesoft "Overture 4"? I still think, though, that the Mac version is "in the pipeline"...
    (stretching as far as the distance from Dover to Calais, methinks [:'(] ).

    The trouble is that Overture is not in the same league as Sibelius when it comes to notation.

    I didn't see that much difference between 2.11 and 3, but Sib4 with its intergrated dynamic parts is killer. And the video, too.

    I not only contemplated it Jam, i even went to bat for them here by bringing the update and changes in the program to VSL users attention, based on Geniesoft's stated premise that it would be available in Mac format shortly after the windows version had been released.
    However it seems the Mac version remains a distant dream.

    Rather premature on my part, at the time........


    As for the unlikely scenario that Sibelius will retain its independence, well, we shall see. I'm speculating about the outcome no less than others. I just have this sinking feeling that even though assurances are being made, there will be a change.
    I've heard lots of assurances before from software companies that have proved to be worthless.

    You may well be right Mathis. My use was from a music perspective with little or no interest or need (at the time) for video.
    More than anything else i wanted hosting, and an end to the various plugins, instead using those basic features as an integral part of the program. (Auto playback of hairpins, and cres/dim being my main request).
    I was informed at the time of asking, that no work would be done in this area, as the program would need a major rewrite. I asked, in addition, about hosting, but got the same answer.

    My interest in upgrading waned considerably after that.

    i'd like to remark that AVID (and digidesign is a division of AVID) did a great job on streamlining Softimage|3D to XSI after they aquired it from microsoft, basically a complete re-write. and you'd assume they don't know too much about animation as a hardware and video-cutting company, but IMO they succeeded in a terrific way.

    Well the word so far is that the development team remains the same, so the next version is safe. However as Digi have said that they are looking for more integration with PT, the development will have to be carried out by someone, so I hope that the usual team doesn't get distracted from the main product. Of course Digi will make sure that there is no integration with other sequencers, so that is a lost cause.
    Obviously the current PT developers know very little about notation software but I would hope that they would take a lot of advice from the Sibelius team when it comes to implementation, otherwise it could end up looking like Cubase/Logic etc. notation features; cr*p [[:|]]

    It's that potential 'exclusivity' of sequencer that gives me pause to see this move as less than desirable.
    And given the general low priority that sequencer developers give notation as a part of the total package, i don't hold out much hope for this one either.

    How's the shed doing?

    The sad thing is that most people think ProTools must be a good audio application and sequencer because it is used in most commercial studios. What they don't seem to realise is that the MIDI features are like something out of the dark ages and for most people PT means PT LE, which has audio limitations as well. So in fact unless you get the full version (£££££££££££££) Cubase SX is better in every respect that PT.

    Shed is nearly finished; secondary glazing is going in on Monday and then I'm moving in later in the week.

    I just bought Sibelius 4, everything seems pretty clear but I just can't find the damn dynamics! [:@] I assume there must be a chart of all the dynamics such as p,pp mp etc.

    highlght the note control/E and and then Control P or F or right click for more fancy markings.

    Of course it's probably one of the first things in the manual - but no doubt like me when you get a new toy you just wanna play. [:)]

    Depends what you want. Sibelius is first and foremost a notation programme, not a sequencer. As such is you want "ffffffz" you can have it. And, within certain limits, if you want that to affect playback, you can edit the dictionary. Common dynamics are available in the shortcut menu from "Ctrl-E" then "right-click" (from a PC). But there are almost no limits on what can actually be done.

    Sibelius is always my first choice to compose music in. But to actually "play back" music, I tend to export the "MIDI" results, and use a sequencer, and something classy... like VI!
