    ...but I'm surprised at the room settings - how you did the mix with Altiverb?

    The Strings sounds great. How did you manage them? A combination of Orchestra Strings and Solo Strings / Apassionata...? A special EQing? (I know you have an EQ-phobia - sorry [[;)]] ) Could you "unravel the secret(s)".

    Once more: Thank you for taking time and your talent to show the prefences of VSL's samples.

    Just beautiful - no one gets close to VSL's ww's. I agree with Beat - shed some light on your mixing of the strings. For me, I am still having fits with VSL's strings.

  • This is really great. One of the very best pieces done with VSL, VI, anything. Jay has a real affinity for Ravel. And this is very significant, since Ravel and Debussy are to me the ultimate masters of orchestration. Their use of the orchestra is transparent, and of the utmost delicacy, with none of the thickness and crude layering of sound that samples are normally associated with. So it is remarkable that the VSL samples can do this ultimate test of orchestration perfection, in the hands of the Master-samplist Bacall. (Is that the correct term? We are inventing things here as we go, so I am not sure...)

    I am extremely interested in the colors of the orchestra and Ravel is perhaps the supreme colorist. So while it was a ton of work, it was mostly a pleasure. If anything it was perhaps easier since Ravel can achieve (as William notes) so much more with so much less. But I am cursed with the desire to make each performance more expressive than the previous, to wring an extra drop of emotion out of the cold hard samples. So each piece often takes more attention to detail than the previous. But I'm hooked on the challenge. If it ever becomes too easy, I'll probably lose interest. [:D]

    Thanks for sharing your talent..Sometimes ago I posted a topic about a passage of Ravel's works I can't reproduce..so if you have some advice?!!

    Is that possible to do the effect of harmonics like in the sonata for violin and cello from Ravel:
    It's on the second part ( très vif) section 5 in 3/8 ( on my record it's at 35s from the beginning of this mvt. The harmonics on three strings of the cello.
    I tried but I can't reproduce it , it doesn't do a beautiful background!
