  • sorry, the DIGI96 app doesn't launch at all?

I've never had that happen. I'd suggest ripping everything out, reinstall, and make sure your repair permissions. Something in your install got banjaxed.

  • JBM,

Can you confirm you are running 1.4?

    Also,

    How do I repair permissions?

    SvK

  • Also,

just to verify the Digi96 app of 1.4 Logo is no longer the hammer/chisel symbol....iknstead it looks like a pci-card ....right?

I'm just verifying that we have identical setups [;)]

    thaNX,

BTW: I figured out repair permissions.

  • I am attempting to install: DIGI96_14

    MAC OSX is 10.4.7

Here is my thorough de-install procedure:

    1) Delete Old "Settings Dialog" App (the hammer / chisel one)

    2) Delete both Digi96 drivers in system/library/extensions

    3) Delete digi96 p-list file in use/library/preferences

    4) Repair permissions with disk-utility

    5) Reboot computer

    6) Install DIGI96_14 pkg file

Now I see the new "Settings Dialog" app (looks like a pci-card) BUT it will not launch...

And G5 does NOT see the RME card!

Now the DIGI96 1.2a driver DOES work and the Hammer / Chisel App DOES launch.....

BUT stuff plays back with clicks and spikes

The read-me for 1.4 says that is EXACTLY what they fixed!

    Qoute:

    1. Changes since version 1.4

This driver includes a new Settings dialog. The program is now installed during driver installation into the folder Applications. The program is started automatically when a DIGI96 series card is detected in the system. The program stays in the dock when exited.

So in case a DIGI96 series drivers has been installed already:

Remove the former Settings dialog from the Login Items, and delete the file from your hard drive!

    - Apple changed the way CoreAudio works, causing stutter and click effects with the DIGI96 series cards. This driver includes additional erase routines to solve the problems.

    2. Installation

Double-click onto digi96_14.gz to expand the archive file to digi_14.tar and the folder DIGI96_14, which includes the driver file DIGI96.mpkg. Installation works automatically by a double-click on this mpkg (meta-package) file.

Reboot the computer when installation is done.

  • is there any version of OSX where apple does _not_ make changes to core audio? ... sorry for the rant, but mostly such changes are actually undocumented ...

steven, i'd recommend to write to RME-audio support - they love to receive such detailed error reports and are very responsible. once they fixed us a problem with hammerfall PCMCIA and the new aluminium powerbooks (chipset changed - undocumented of course) within 3 weeks

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • CM,

    will do,

  • I'm running the DIGI 96/8 PAD in a G5 dual 1.8 (the older one with the 8 ram slots). It works perfectly well under 10.4.7. What I'm finding confusing in the above is that you mention:

    "...6) Install DIGI96_14 pkg file

Now I see the new "Settings Dialog" app (looks like a pci-card) BUT it will not launch...

And G5 does NOT see the RME card!

Now the DIGI96 1.2a driver DOES work and the Hammer / Chisel App DOES launch..... "

This implies that the 1.2a driver is still installed... yes? If so, rip that out too.

The one odd thing I've always found about the app with 1.4 is that it won't come to the front unless you click it a couple of times. Also, some apps will magically switch the card over to 96 kHz (including the VI standalone app!); no warning, no explanation. It just happens. But those are the only problems I've had. I'm guessing you have either a problem with a PCI slot, or a problem with the card.

Were you on 10.4.6 before 10.4.7, by any chance? I spent all day yesterday fixing my machine after a couple of months of odd and freaky behavior which I strongly suspect was _all_ due to 10.4.6 being crap. I had all sorts of strange, file system-related problems. I wonder if you're having the same sort of issues. If you're running 10.4.7, did you use the Combo Updater, or Software Update?

Also, when you say the G5 does not "see" the card, what do you mean? In the System Profiler? If that's the case either the slot of the card is dead, no two ways about it. System Profiler is the most basic, hardware-level report of what's connected, regardless of drivers, functionailty, etc. You also mention DIGI 9636. Is this a brand new card, or the older model. The old ones were not all G5 compatible... Some were, some weren't. I'm sure you checked this, but just to be sure.

...also, if the G5 doesn't see the card, why are you getting any sound at all?

    J.

  • The G5 doesn't see the card with 1.4

It does with 1.2a (but that clicks and pops)

    SvK

    Also I wasn't clear....

When I install 1.4, I make sure everything is ripped out

The scenario where I get sound is when I have the 1.2a installed

( I never have both installed)

    What is this pad thing?
Does that work with hammerfall lite?

    SvK

  • Oh no, the PAD is just a model line of the 96/8, don't know what it means.

Sorry, again you say it doesn't see the card... how do you mean?

Also, there's an eprom on the card that offers either Mac or Windows compatibilty; it should have a sticker saying either "W52", "W36", "M52", or "M36". "W" is for Windows, and well... you get the idea! [;)]

Check that, and make sure you've got "M36" (or "M52").

    J.

  • ps-- here's a link to the eproms. Bottom of the page:

    http://www.synthax.co.uk/rmeaccess.html

    J.

  • JBM,

WHen I remove the extentions AND the settings dialog app of 1.2a....and then install current driver 1.4 THEN the computer doesn't see the card!

Now.....If I then DEINSTALL 1.4 (get rid of extentions , plist, and steings dialog)and REINSTALL 1.2a....then the computer sees the card...

    BUT 1.2a clicks and pops...

    To recap .....

Under 1.2a computer sees card, under 1.4 it doesn't.

I'm aware of the old revisions of cards that are not compatible with G5 .....but if I had one of those, it wouldn't work at all.

I really do appreciate you assisting me......

    SvK

  • Yes , I have the correct eprom.

    M36 [;)]

    SvK

  • Sorry. My confusion is with the word "see". Where are you looking to determine whether it sees the card? System Profiler? Either way, if it was not showing up in the System Profiler you'd have a real problem, since it should appear there regardless of driver support.

Anyway, you should have the message about the eproms. Get back to me about that.

    J.

  • Oh, okay... so the eprom is good. (Funny chatting like this, with our messages out of sync.)

Well, I'm a bit stumped. What about the 10.4.7 update: Combo or Software Update? It does kind of seem like a software issue. As I said, my card is a little different, but has given me no problems in any OS since 10.3.x.

    J.

  • When I say "see"...I mean that it doesn't show up as an audio output option in bidule OR audio/midi setup APP.

    This is a nightmare....

    SvK

  • RME has no phone #s

    what a joke

    SvK

  • I sent a detailed tech-email...to RME

    Waiting to hear back.

    SvK

  • I always update from system preferences / software update.

Okay. Sorry, I had a job fixing Macs for a while last year, and we always used "see" to mean System Profiler (often the quickest way of spotting a hardware problem).

Anyway, I'm really sorry I couldn't help. If I think of anything else I'll get back to you.

    J.

  • I'm watching this with interest and fear! I also have a 9636 card, with v1.2a and I have never had clicks and pops. Now I'm worried about moving to OS10.4.7....

I do have DIGI settings v1.4 but also found that it would never launch. I just checked and I actually have 2 files in System/Library/Extensions:
    digi96.kext
    digi9652.kext

Remarkably, I appear to be running the new .kext file with the old Settings app!! Maybe that's the secret..... (I'm not changing anything....it works)

By the way, I had an old revision card and had to modify it for my G5. All working perfectly though.
