  • In film scores where do you guys tend to mix the basses?

    Hi all,

I tend to place the basses center ( so I deviate from the traditional "right" positioning)

    Anyone else?

  • Double basses I have left on the 'right side' of the stage BUT electric basses I stick dead center. Works for me but I can be convinced otherwise.

  • I put them in the center too. I guess it depends on the music, but a lot of film music has the bass very loud, so that takes up a lot of dBs and it's best to spread it between both channels. The VSL Pizz basses go in the center too, the stereo width reduced to practically nil, as otherwise, in my opinion, they carry too much out of phase information (for broadcast).

  • Very interesting Tanuj. Could you suggest some plugs or EQ settings to help 'fatten' the bass?

Keep it to the right - for orchestral writing..because otherwise it wont sound realistic and trust me - it works if you keep it to the right.....its the nature of the set up of the orchestra, the instrument itself and the acoustics.

Just FYI, I recall the LOTR film sessions having the cellos and basses on the left. This is a bit uncommon, but a lot of things on that project were uncommon. [[;)]]
