  • Other than live purposes what's the advantage of using a Breath Controller and what is the cost of a good one?

    Hi,

I´m also constantly using a Breath Controller for Velocity XFade and it´s great!

All the demos Christian Kardeis made for the Vienna Instruments were performed live with a Breath Controller.

Which kind of optimisations would you like to see?

    Best,

    Paul

    Hi Paul,

Quick question for you. I have found using the Breath controller 'natural' with the filter and use the foot pedal for velxfading.

Do you find it better to use the breath controller for velxfade and another controller - foot or slider or mod wheel for the filter.

    Many thanks in advance.

Hey - Guy - hope all is well. I may miss your question intent (not a first for me [:O]ops: ) but when writing I find the breath controller literally 'breathing' life into the samples. I'll even use it on dynamic samples to get more or less intensity for that particular cue (as we all know - there a 1000 different applications for these static sample - making them 'fit' sometimes many of them is the challenge.

Here is a rough mix of a cue I am working on now. All the brass and WW's were played in 'live' with the BC-3 breath controller.

(just wondering if my question to Paul would make it even better??)

  • Thanks Rod and for that cool sample.

But sorry for being a moron about this, I'm so unfamiliar with it, I have a feeling it's a kinky device you blow into ... [*-)]

And how is it any different from a keyboard controller allowing a variability from 1-127?

  • Hi,

I use the Breath Controller with Vel Xfade exclusively and find it much better than with an expression pedal, and I mainly apply the Breath Controller for slow expressive passages.

    Does that help?

  • What's a fair price for one? In case I'd see one at the dollar store.... [:D]

  • Thanks Paul. I'll try a couple of patches that way and see which fit better for me. Thanks again.

Guy - I think I paid $80 on line for it - google Yamaha BC-3 and you'll get a dozen sites.

    Hope this helps.

  • Guy,

You should be able to get a Yamaha BC3 for under $100. Unless your keyboard accepts a breath controller you may need an interface box. I suggest getting a MIDI Solutions breath controller box (made in your very own country - so you know they will be polite).

Most likely you will need a MIDI cable to go from your keyboard to the interface box (the BC3 is also plugged into this) then another MIDI cable to go to your MIDI interface device. You also want to talk to the MIDI solutions people about getting a small MIDI file that will set the MIDI system exclusive in your sequencer.

I believe the MIDI Solutions box is under $200.

By the way, it's well worth it.

  • Guy, I bought a Yamaha BC3 for 130$ CAN [[;)]]

  • That's really great. Thanks everyone for that info [:D] I guess I must have it.

Yes - the cheapest 'facelift' you can get - Botox included [[:D]]

    Good luck Guy.

Wow, sounds really great. I justed wished you would use the breath controller also for the strings.

Yea - I tried the breath controller (tied into the filter) and HATED that effect on the strings but now that I have the BC on the velxfade (BTW - this MUCH better!!!!), that just might work.

Out of curiosity, what strings could benefit from a BC? This is a very rough draft with little or no mixing (and not finished to the scene), but I would love a 3rd party opinion.

    All the best,

    Rob

    Hey Rob,

    That sounds incredible to me!
were have you got this solo ww and ethnic instruments from? did you play it with the breath controler too?? they don't sound like VSL!?!

    Daniel

  • You know-- it helps greatly when the composition and instrumental concept are as well conceived as this piece is.

Rob-- thanks for the journey and continued success with the cue. Bravo!
