    Hey all,

    I just read a thread on here from about a month ago, and Doug mentioned that we can transfer licenses for our VI libraries amongst various computers in the studio...

    but what if (and Doug mentioned this) we want to split things up within each library..say, split the strings amongst 2 computers (1 for hi, 1 for low)...or the brass?

    that there is more flexibility with this way than other options out there for copy protection...but, again, unhappy limitation here.

    again, I saw the other thread, but wanted to confirm this again.

    I don't know anything about the technical details of how to make this work, but I really feel that copy protection needs to work on a whole subnet rather than a single machine. Musicians are treating multiple computers as one instrument as a matter of course these days, and this is starting to become a problem.

    This applies to the whole industry, of course, not specifically VSL or Syncrosoft.

    The one catch is that people might be tempted not to buy site licenses, and I'm not sure what the answer to that is - or even if it's a significant factor.

    Maybe it would be possible to offer sub-dongles that require a main dongle on the same subnet to work.

    In any case, I think this is becoming increasingly important as the complexity of the software rigs we're using increases - even after 64-bit computers arrive.

    agreed. also, I think (as an side note) that mobility is important as well....if that makes sense to everyone...i know that for a library this big, we often tend to think of it staying in 1 room...but I like to be mobile...

    ...go over to someone's studio and use my library there or even demo the library to friends...bosses...and such...just like a musician would a new horn.

    josh, the mobility is covered ... take a firewire disk with you, latest Vienna Instruments Software, LCC installer, ViennaKey .... install, run directory manager, play

    nick, currently it is not possible to *network licenses* like eg. WIBU allows to keep licenses on a central server. the suggestion to limit some (to be developed) network licensing to a subnet sounds interesting and clever though ...

    However, there is a real issue with the strings. Strings have been the backbone for orchestral writing for centuries, and therefore usually need the most articulations. Currently, although the orchestral strings can be split between two computers, Chamber and Solo strings can't, therefore in order to take advantage of the flexibility of such things as cell xfade and combining solo/chamber and orchestral patches all the strings need to be on one computer. This is not really a very good solution. A better one would be to split the Solo and Chamber strings into two licences, just as the Orchestral Strings are.
